This will be my second copy of Forked Deer - I gave my first to a Mando friend. To me, this is an essential source for anyone who really loves old time fiddle playing. The sound quality is a bit poor, like any source, but you will soon be hearing beyond the limits of the recording equipment of the day once you get into Ed Haley's incredible groove ( enhanced by some kick butt Mandolin playing by his wife).

Ed Haley plays the tunes with such buoyancy and spirit. Once you think you have it down, he starts adding these mind blowing variations - all delivered with lightness, agility and an almost scat singing- like consonance at the front of the bow strokes. Doot dah doot da doot. Listen and see what you think!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great album, get it if you can, February 4, 2010

There's no way on earth I'd pay $59 for an album. The prices listed here makes this album extremely unaccessable to the lay man. Even tho the tunes are great.

ADDENDUM Feb. 8, 2011: I found a copy of this album on Amazon for $20. Got it immediately.

This album had been - along with the Document's Leake County Revelers Vol. 1, Volume 2 of Ed Haley and Edn Hammons (these three albums still remain too expensive for me on this site) - elusive to me by its price sensitivity.

No longer Ed Haley's Forked Deer, which is probably the best - even better than Emmett Lundy - of the Old Time Masters I've heard. He's got so many styles nailed. The songs are beautiful and complex and have so much in them, blues, rags and the general old time feel. Get this if you can find a way to afford it, it's a rewarding listen.

Also to note. These songs seem well ahead of their time. There are hints of so many other musical styles in these recordings. They are a joy.
