Editorial Reviews

Review

"Do you ever read about a place and have the sense that you were right there? That's what this book made me feel like. Everyone should have the opportunity to travel, but if you can't head out to all the countries that Allan writes about just yet, you should at least buy this book and start daydreaming." --Chris Guillebeau,  New York Times bestselling author of "The $100 Startup"

"Karl has a knack for selecting the best moments of his three-year journey, the encounters that reveal unique aspects of each country he visits; then he wraps each chapter with a mouth-watering recipe that captures the essence the country's cuisine. "FORKS" is a beautifully designed book that does what every travel book should do: It encourages you to get out, dig in and explore." -- Michael Shapiro, author of "A Sense of Place: Great Travel Writers Talk About Their Craft, Lives, and Inspiration"

"I love this book; it’s a work of art. Part adventure story, part photo essay, part recipe book, and all gorgeous, Forks: A Quest for Culture, Cuisine, and Connection lives in a category by itself."  —Steve Farber, author, The Radical Leap

"This is not your ordinary travel memoir . . . Gotta love it—travel, adventure, photography and food."  —Vera Marie Badertscher, blogger,
A Traveler's Library

"All of us at Overland International love a good travel epic and Allan Karl may have provided us with one of our favorite stories of the year."  —Christophe Noel, editor, Expedition Portal

"Allan Karl is a naturally vibrant explorer of roads, continents, people, and cuisine. His full-color book reflects this vibrance with photos of the people he meets and the food he is offered. You're going to want it!"  —Carla King, author, American Borders

From the Inside Flap

Culture. Cuisine. Connection.

FORKS brings the world to your table:
  • An around-the-world adventure story.
  • A colorful photo book.
  • A global cookbook.
Why would someone sell nearly everything he owns, then pack up and travel for three years--alone--on a motorcycle?

One day Allan Karl woke up to discover that he was unemployed and his marriage had ended in divorce. Instead of harboring resentment or wallowing in self-pity, Allan looked at the forks in the road of his life as an opportunity to both follow a life-long dream and pursue his passions.

He hopped on his motorcycle and traveled around the world--alone. After three years and 62,000 miles of riding, through 35 countries on 5 continents, he returned home only to set out on another journey--in search of the best way to share the truths he'd uncovered and the lessons learned during his adventure around the world.

Discover the world through people and food with adventurer Allan Karl.

Explore 35 countries on five continents: Witness their beauty through stunning photographs. Meet their peoples through individual stories of collision and connection. Taste their cultures through the flavors and foods in 40 signature recipes.

The stories, photographs, and recipes in FORKS give readers an opportunity to cross into unfamiliar and often dangerous territories, explore unique world cultures, and chart an extraordinary expedition around the world, all while savoring the flavors of local food.

A book to satisfy seasoned explorers, armchair travelers, and culinary adventurers alike.

This book is a great record of an amazing motorcycle journey with culture and cuisine captured on every page. Not only does Allan describe his journey and the people he meets along the way but he has collected a terrific group of recipes and other culinary tips, unique to each region he visited.
The photography and presentation are first-class. This makes a great coffee table book and discussion topic as well as a highly useful opportunity to try different global foods in your own home.
Highly recommended for yourself and as a gift for others.

Wow. All I can say is Wow.

Allan Karl has produced a masterpiece book about his epic adventure.

He stepped out of his comfort zone, grew some huge cojones and said, "Screw it. This is what I want to do with my life right now." Not many have that kind of courage. His is a midlife crisis gone right.

THREE YEARS. FIVE CONTINENTS. ONE MOTORCYCLE.
FORKS: A QUEST FOR CULTURE, CUISINE AND CONNECTION.

Karl pulled up stakes, got rid of life's trappings, traveled solo and came back richer for the experience. In his stunning book, a travelogue with heart, readers can travel with him, savoring the local foods, marveling at the local topography and connecting with the locals. And local is a relative term: it's whatever country, city or place he happens to be.

I got particularly excited about receiving my autographed copy of this book because I recognized the ad man in Karl. That was his business in his former life. Every design detail of FORKS is not just buttoned down but tied to his larger concept. Every nit, from the alliteration to the writing to the photography to the packaging to the postcards to the pen he uses to autograph copies right down to the sticker that seals the bubble wrap, is not for the picking; it simply reeks of excellence. And this dude was not handed a huge publisher's advance for this project. In fact, was turned down. So he made Kickstarter the real kickstand that supported this effort, and the results put Rizzoli to shame. Their loss.

Readers need to come hungry, a little bored and perhaps even jaded. FORKS will snap you out of your frightened, frozen reverie and plant the seed of wander- and the rest of the -lusts that are likely missing from your life right now. I want to go with him on his next adventure. Wherever and however that is. How very alive he must feel!

I couldn't wait to get my Forks so as soon as I received it I started reading it. It was so fascinating to follow the route. Had both my own map and Forks map so I easily could follow his trip. I found myself worrying about him and how he got out of som situations. It was hard to put it down. The recipes are outstanding and I have tried several of them already. If you want a real exotic travel trip pretty much around the world this is highly recommended and fun reading

When I picked up the book Forks by Allan Karl I was reading it before doing an Interview for "Riding on the Mud" my radio show on KMUD 91.1 FM in Redway Ca. It was at 700 AM in the morning on the day before my show.I could not put it down, the story was fascinating, read until my 3rd cup of coffee! Forks was an amazing blend of food, adventure and motorcycling. The story of his experience in Columbia evoked a vision of some thing out of a Tom Clancy book! his stories of the people were engrossing, and filled with passion. The pictures are mouth watering, and my wife being a great cook was fascinated As a member of a Motorcycle Club whose motto was "Ride To Eat,Eat To Ride"it certainly did not disappoint. It's refreshing to have a wonderful talking piece on the coffee table instead of a handful of old magazine. The beautifully collected imagery and stories from across the world surround (marinate?) the recipes that the author collected in his travels -- often from regular people, in their homes, having met them only hours before. It's fantastic when you realize that these come from the inspired story of one person that decided it was worth the risk to explore.

The great part about this book is that it fits in some many places; you can pick it up and browse the photos, and choose to explore a few pages here and there. The recipes are inspired and the directions are surprisingly easy to follow -- and the ones I've made have been excellent. The only downside is that the book is so beautiful, you almost hate to risk spilling the ingredients on it.

Forks is one of those books that's hard to describe because it's in a genre all its own.
