Book Description

December 1, 2009

An indispensable primer for students and first-stop reference for professionals, Form, Fit, and Fashion guides the fashion designer through the entire design process, from conceiving a garment to marketing it.

This handbook collects the information and ideas essential to planning and executing fashion projects of every scale and distills them in an easy-to-use format that is compact enough to slip into a tote. Linking six central phases in the cycle of fashion—research, editing, design, construction, connection, and evolution—Form, Fit, and Fashion will help designers to develop effective strategies for building a cohesive collection and communicating their vision.

More About the Author

Jay Calderin teaches a wide variety of fashion and professional development courses at the School of Fashion Design in Boston, where he is also the Director of Creative Marketing. He founded and serves as Executive Director of Boston Fashion Week. He is currently the Regional Director of the Fashion Group International of Boston. Calderin's designs have appeared in the pages of Vogue and Elle magazines.

One of the most interesting parts of writing the book was being able to conduct several inspiring designer interviews -- Ralph Rucci, Isaac Mizrahi, Yeohlee, Joseph Abboud, Carla Fernandez, Philip Treacy as well as insights from fashion professionals like Fern Mallis (senior vice president of IMG Fashion), Katherine Bowers (a contributor for WWD), Gretta Monahan (co-host of Tim Gunn's Guide to Style), Dawn Mello (formerly with Bergdorf Goodman & Gucci) and Pamela Parmal (curator at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston).

Author Jay Calderin says, "Form, Fit, & Fashion makes a great gift for enterprising style professionals, ardent fans of fashion, and of course the next generation of aspiring designers. This concise, yet comprehensive overview of the industry has been edited to serve as an accessible collection of information, insights and resources that you come back to again and again. Thought-provoking and relevant questions throughout the book engage the reader, challenging them to think strategically and use innovative methods to pursue their passion creatively!"

The Los Angeles Times says, "A new fashion bible for designers, aspirers and the just plain curious, this tome contains all the secrets."
