Book Description

Betrayal will cost you your soul

More than anything, young Sentu wants to learn the new letters of Pharaoh Menes's court. No one of his caste in this ancient civilization learns the language of hieroglyphics, and so, born of lowly  stock, his acceptance into the Egyptian priesthood must surely be a miracle.

He soon learns that not all is as holy as it appears in the privileged world of scribes and priests. Black magics and malice abound in the court of the first pharaoh of ancient Egypt, and Book of the Dead theology is twisted into an avenue for personal gain.

The acolytes suffer under the tutelage of Hozat, the High Priest: ritual sacrifices involve more than  mere beasts, they involve anyone who stands in Hozat's way to ultimate power. Though Sentu is at first spared much of the darkest of Hozat's secrets, he soon realizes he cannot escape the fate of his
ka forever.

When Pharaoh invades Nubia and takes hostage that land's powerful sorceress, Sentu's own world crashes around him, and he has to discover whether justice is more important to him than forgiveness.

Formed of Clay is historical fantasy that transports the reader into a dark exploration of a world before the pyramids in a time rich with mythology, betrayal, and sacrifice.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Clever Author April 30, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
A very clever author indeed created, Formed of Clay. Thea Atkinson immediately plunges the reader into a fabulous tale written in the style of an ancient mythological tale with Gods and Goddesses in a stunning mystical view of creation. This introduction provides the mood for a masterful dark ancient tale.

Set in ancient Egypt, the story follows a tender boy on a surprising journey. Sentu, the foster son of a scribe is amazed to find himself studying as priest. His mentor, Hozat is at the top of the Pharaoh's priestly hierarchy.

The growing young boy soon discovers things aren't always what they seem. Sentu experiences a labyrinth filled with deception, and betrayal at the hands of those he once believed were holy. The boy must participate, and suffer within an evil hidden in the background of ancient Egypt.

The author creates a fascinating dark tale that weaves together mythology, and Egyptian history into a spellbinding story as modern as it is ancient. The ending will surprise even the most astute.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pages Became Pictures July 8, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
To be honest, I was going to give this novella four stars, but a story that continues to creep back into your mind has to be awarded a five. Formed of Clay is one of the most vivid pieces I have ever read - sights, smells, sounds were presented beautifully and held me captive. The writing is dramatic and lofty. Every scene was quite powerful.

Since I am unfamiliar with Egyptian history I was lost in a more than a few spots. Terms such as: Set, kamut, hedj shentis, kalasiris flew over my head. Mythology involving Ma'at's feather, the eye of Horus, and the scales of Anubis are also unknown to me. Ms. Atkinson gives hints to the meaning of these things most of the time... others not. I wonder how much more I would have loved this book if I knew what she was talking about 100% of the time.

I plan to add Pray for Reign to my TBR list. I know a more about that time in history.

Despite my confusion in places, I learned a lot about ancient Egypt. The facts are weaved beautifully into the story - kings as gods, hierarchy of the harem, scribes, priests, spells, and burial rituals.

Thea Atkinson's writing can be brutal and quite dark. I found myself cringing at the images she painted in my head. Bravo. That being said, I couldn't help thinking that Thea would make an excellent middle grade or young adult author. I was completely sucked in as a reader. The pages became pictures. A person who can do that should write for kids.

Formed of Clay is an amazing story. Go, buy, read.
