Book Description

October 1999
Besides his decades-long activity as a typographer, Adrian Frutiger has also occupied himself with 'free' forms which now have been comprehensively documented for the first time in this book. In Frutiger's work the harmonious relationship between form and opposing form, and between black and white becomes a statement about what human beings and the world could be: a harmonious co-existence of antagonisms that fundamentally contradict one another.

If you are already a fan of Adrian Frutiger and want a nice coffee table book then this book is perfect. For solid reference information, I would not recommend the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Frutiger from the different point of view, May 14, 2008

One thing on this book is really great: to see how many shared, similar principles of design you can find both in Frutiger's type design on the one side and woodcuts and drawings on the other side. Relation between forms and counterforms, outside and inside, open and closed, black and white is the pure essence of all the works by Adrian Frutiger. No matter if he is holding engraving tool or pencil, drawing letterforms or any other possible signs.

5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!, April 6, 2008
This review is from: Forms and Counterforms (Paperback)
I first encountered this book at my school library while looking for some inspiration for a design project. Not only did I renew this book 3 times (which was the max), but I ended up buying a copy for myself! The typography inside is beautiful and shows how Frutiger came up with many of his type designs by referencing organic objects. Genius!
