Interesting, readable, enjoyable,

This review is from: Fort Macon: A History (Hardcover)
I bought this book on a visit to the fort itself and read itduring return visits while on vacation in the area. Branch writes aneasily readable, interesting, and enjoyable book that stands well alone and compliments visits to the fort. Both the book and the fort are great references for enthusiasts of American Coastal defense.

This review is from: Fort Macon: A History (Hardcover)
This book is about a fort that was obsolete when designed, was only intermittently utilized, and fell to Federal forces in a single day during the early stages of the Civil War.
The history of Fort Macon is interesting to locals. And, the fort is a popular visitor destination, serving as a good example of military construction of the 1830s. But, in the grander scheme of things, the fort had very little impact on anything except that it was part of the founding of the State Parks in North Carolina, which this book addresses only in passing. This book had numerous typographical errors, also.
