I have read several of Simmons books and have really loved them, but not this one! BLECH! The writing here is wonderful as usual but the characters are down right irritating. I don't think that I liked a SINGLE character in this book. SERIOUSLY!

First of all the Melissa is too icy, giving everyone the "look" with her chin jutting up in the air. She is constantly ranting and raving like a shrew too. I understand that in the beginning she must keep up the facade in order to weed out the fortune hunters but after she falls in love and is married -what's the point? Can't she melt a little bit more? Acting like that just exasperates her image.

Secondly the Leighton is just blah. He's a bona fide mister average and definitely boring. I don't know about anyone else who reads romance but I want my hero's to be passionate -about something at least! Supposedly he a fine art connoisseur. Then why didn't he, after the marriage, try to buy back all the paintings that were sold to pay off his father's debts? And he's none too intelligent either! I won't even tell you how many attempts were made on the Melissa's life before Leighton figured out that they were not just "accidents". And he didn't seem that panicked that his wife almost died -several times! I understand that that its Simmons way of trying to make us believe that maybe Leighton is the villain. But really! In what ROMANCE does the hero try to kill the heroine? They don't call it a happily-ever-after-ending for nothing. SHEESH!

His father is an idiot too. A gambler and a drunk who is portrayed by the author as some harmless cuddly old man. Hello! Leighton is, in fact, in this situation BECAUSE of his fathers lack of restraint. And does ANYBODY do anything about it? NO. The father is simply patted on the head and allowed to drown himself in spirits, women and gambling. WHAT?!?

The only hope I had was for the villains. There is one particular lady that just oozes the jealous ex personality. She is just nasty! But her ending is just flat and completely disappointing.

The absolute worst was the ending. A secondary romance is revealed thats really just laughable. And also a twist that left me quite annoyed. Not at all satisfying.

Skip this and read The Vicar's Daughter, The Devil Earl, or Tempting Kate instead.
