Editorial Reviews

Vinyl LP pressing. 2012 release from the former Cocteau Twins member. In these ten new songs the listener can find a companion and confidant, a source of inspiration and reflection, and above all, a beautiful expression of all that life's twists and turns of fortune can bring to our lives. Opening with the appropriately titled 'Cadence' and the seductive, heady waltz of 'Circus Circus', Fortune quickly reveals itself to be a rich and varied emotional journey. The delicate, refined 'Ladybird' and lush, immersive atmospherics of 'Tigermilk' lead into the heavenly 'Like Water In Water' and gentle, reflective 'Lavona's Life'. The album opens up further in the second half. The poise and elegance of 'Forever Never' and 'Perfume And Youth' lead into the epic, climactic 'Kings Will Be Falling.' The album closes with the tender 'And So To Sleep, My Little Ones', a beautiful track that ends the journey on a note of tranquil reflection.

5.0 out of 5 stars 30 years on... Guthrie still amazes December 1, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
1982 marks the 30th anniversary of Robin Guthrie's first work in the dark and heavily-accented Cocteau Twins releases "Garlands" and "Lullabies". The release of Fortune, 30 years later, shows that Guthrie's work, however underappreciated, continues to push the limits of how guitars can be used to weave the tapestry of human emotion. Robin Guthrie continues to be one of the best at emoting on wood and wire, making the best use of effects in conjunction with the natural overtones of the instruments at his disposal. The tracks "Circus Circus" and "Like Water in Water" demonstrate these effects well, though "Forever Never" is, in my opinion, the most emotionally charged and beautiful Guthrie offering to date. If you loved "Carousel" and "Songs to Help My Children Sleep" then "Fortune" is a must-have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome December 10, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
Great new effort, refreshing soundscapes with a super-dreamy feel that resonates. Each song makes you wanna hit repeat, hard to get through the album on the 1st listen because you just wanna play the last song you hear, over and over again. Very Hammock like, Cocteau heaven!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Safe Bet For Guthrie Lovers February 10, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Erstwhile Cocteau Twin Robin Guthrie has been carving out a solo career for some time now, so the chances are that most people investigating this release will already be familiar with at least some of his body of work. If you are, then rest assured that this release is no departure from his canon. If you are new to Guthrie then dip your toes into the water with this CD.

As with all Guthrie releases the production values are high. These instrumental tracks will gently lift you and carry you along into a dreamscape if you are prepared to let them. Stylistically, Guthrie remains constant to what he does so very well, playing layered recordings of electric guitar over muted rhythmic accompaniment. His use of effects and treatments for his instrument bring breadth and depth to his sound. The music floats at times and at others gently cascades, bearing the listener along with it.

Play this CD and let it carry you away from the cares of the day.
