Bringing back memories of Myrtle Beach,
By Charlie Fisher (Atlanta, GA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fortune/Rock the Night Away/Live at the Roxy (Audio CD)
SugarCreek rocked the East Coast for 16 years. They played hundreds of gigs every year. They made it to the semi-finals of Ed McMahon's Star Search. Catch their music, it will bring back the 80's. They OWNED the Magic Attic in Myrtle Beach and electrified the South's biggest teen club for a dozen years. The band had a road crew that was almost as famous as the band, Tally Fisher, Gray Peck, John Gilreath, Ronnie Hatley, Kevin, Charlie and the unforgettable "Bam-Bam" provided as much entertainment back stage as the band did onstage. The guys in the band are still running around in the Carolinas, catch them and they will perform a "Creek" hit for you. Rick Lee and Lynn Samples are in "Too Much Sylvia", Jerry West is in "The Band Of Oz" and Tim Clark is "Deja Vu" all over again.

5 Star Disc,
By Glenn (Raleigh, NC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fortune/Rock the Night Away/Live at the Roxy (Audio CD)
The only thing wrong with this disc set, is the fact thatnobody else from our home state but me wrote about these guys. I see all these replies from Georgia and Florida and none from N.C. Well, these guys kicked butt. Their music said it all. The only reason they did not make it all the way is of course the music industry suits that did not listen to the music. The guys in the band as well as the guys behind the band. A great bunch. I worked with several of the guys and had many opportunities to see them perform live. If you have any repect for great rock and roll, buy these discs. The addition of "Lovely Little Lady" from the demo disc is great. That version was played on the original WROQ in Charlotte for years. Check this out or have your brain check out.

An old Magic Attic DJ with his 2 cents worth,
This review is from: Fortune/Rock the Night Away/Live at the Roxy (Audio CD)
I spent 90 nights straight working as the DJ at the Magic Attic in the summer of 85 and 86 (DJ name Chase). It was a pure pleasure working with these guys and seeing the magic they made on stage. I fondly remember the lines of people stretching a few blocks and lining up two hours early to get into the club. THAT is the power this band had on its fans.
I would play my music set from 7-830, then kill the lights, hit the fog machine and turn off the tarantula light before the guys hit the stage. They would play the first set to screaming fans and then I would come on with a 30 minute set at 10, then they brought down the house up until about midnight. I went on to work in radio in Myrtle Beach and Nashville but seldom encountered a band with so much talent. Backstage we had a riot playing practical jokes on each other. Was that Brut after shave in the fog machine? Poor Tim hated that. And of course, the highlight of my life was dressing up like an idiot while Tim belted out the lyrics to "Arthur Whiteside". I miss these guys and the fun we had. They provided the soundtrack for so many young people in the 80's and as we are now older, we can understand their value even more. Tim, Rick and the rest of the guys, we miss you and are excited to be able to purchase this music and bring back the magic.

This CD brings back Myrtle Beach Memories,
By William A. Primm (Reading, pa USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fortune/Rock the Night Away/Live at the Roxy (Audio CD)
From 1980 - 1987, Sugarcreek played at the Magic Attic in Myrtle Beach, S.C. They were a major draw to both the teenager and early 20's age group. Many people that spend a summer in Myrtle Beach during that time frame experienced their great sound. I was lucky enough to buy the Live at the Roxy and Fortune LPs in 1982 and the Rock The Night Away Tape in 1984. I recorded both LP's and lost them over the years. A few years ago, I pulled out the old tapes and burned them to CD. Unfortunately, I still longed for a perfect digital copy. Now it has finally happened and at an ideal price. If you are a Sugarcreek fan, buy it quickly and bring back the memories. I can only hope they reunite for a summer tour in Myrtle Beach. That would be like a trip to the past.

I am from NC and saw Sugarcreek at the Magic Attic many times. I have all their LP's and this CD is great. I got to meet the guys once when they played at our local skating rink where I worked as a DJ. If you have never heard of Sugarcreek dont hesitate to buy this CD. You will not be disappointed!!

I grew up in Myrtle Beach and Sugarcreek at the Magic Attic was the greatest!! We moved to Ft. Lauderdale, FL in '84 and my Sugarcreek vinyl went with me. I introduced Sugarcreek to anyone who would listen and it instantly became the music of choice whenever my friends and I would hang out at the beach on a Saturday night. I still have my vinyl, but I have been waiting for the CD forever. I can't wait to get this one!!!!

I knew the band,

I was a big fan right from their beginning. I was lucky enough to know the original guys personally and even got in free and got to go backstage. I did a lot of photography of the band in Clemson, SC. In fact, I'd love to hear from Rick Lee if he reads this. I'm sure he remembers me. As for their music, they could imitate any of the top bands of the early 80's. They were amazing and their music would echo in your head for hours after a concert. I believe they didn't make it because they tried to improve on a perfect sound. They could have been another Journey, 38-Special if they'd kept to the theme of Live at the Roxy.

You Can Have Jimmy Buffett....Sugarcreek IS Beach Music!!,

This review is from: Fortune/Rock the Night Away/Live at the Roxy (Audio CD)
Some of my best teen memories come from seeing Sugarcreek play live at the Magic Attic in Myrtle Beach! Fortune alone is worth the price of this 3 disk set. Soothsayer will stick in your brain and have you tapping your foot all day, and American Girls is one of the best Rock Anthems ever. But the real find of this CD collection is "Conquest for the Commoner", this is just an amazing tune and unlike anything else on the disk. A fantasy themed tune that is immediately infectious, and impossible not to crank up. The guitar work, the unforgettable chorus, the drum work...you just won't believe this was an indy production. I wore out my cassette of Fortune and have been looking for years for a CD. "Rock the Night Away", the second cd in the collection is good too, it just doesn't have the same sound as "Fortune". "Rock the Night" leans more toward a "pop" sound, at times similar to J. Geils or Night Ranger, but still very enjoyable. The third disk "Live at the Roxy" is good as far as live albums go, the production is better than you would expect from an indy release. And the real treasure is the studio track "Lovely Little Lady" which is a really fun tune that is similar to the music found on "Fortune". I know Sugarcreek appeared on Star Search but I still can't understand how these guys never got national attention? If you are a fan of 80's metal & pop you HAVE to get this disc set! Lots of fun poppy guitar driven rock that is perfect for a summer night, at the beach or other wise.

The Best band on Star Search You May Not Have Heard!,
By
This review is from: Fortune/Rock the Night Away/Live at the Roxy (Audio CD)
Sugarcreek was one of the hardest working bands in the mid-atlantic region throughout the 80's. Their incredible talents even landed them on the Star Search competition, before American Idol was a thought! This 3 CD collection follows the band as they grow, performing live and in the studio. The "Live at the Roxy" cd showcases the band in what they did best, perform live! It was also their first album! The jewel of this set is the "Fortune" cd. You will be reminded of Styx, (Tim Clark singing "Conquest for The Commoner"),and Rush, (Jerry West vocals "On the Borderline") among others. Song for song, this is worth the price alone. Some people have to put a label on music, so you might "label" this as "80's music". I just consider them "cool tunes that rock". After listening to these 3 albums, available on cd for the first time, you too may find yourself scratching you head wondering why don't more people know about this band?

Sugarcreek rocked the East Coast! Great rock and roll music.,

I used to go see this band where ever they played. They were semi-finalists on Star Search back in '84. Lynn, Jerry, Rick, Tim and a road crew that rocked. Tally and Charlie Fisher, John Gilreath, Ronnie Hatley, Kevin and Gray Peck(God rest his soul) kept these guys moving all over the east coast. This band had a huge following, packing in the Magic Attic in Myrtle Beach and opening for some National Acts like Emerson, Lake and Powell, Huey Lewis and the News, Honeymoon Suite, Sawyer Brown and many others. These songs are timeless, just give them a listen.
