Book Description

1997
Predicting the future by the turn of a playing card has become associated with fairground booths and gypsy fortune tellers, but the ordinary pack of playing cards has an illustrious and ancient history as a potent and effective oracle. This popularly written guide traces the history and symbolism of the cards and gives full instructions on how to spread them to give readings.

5.0 out of 5 stars worth the time, December 9, 1999

This expose on oracular use of playing cards, is one of the best sources I have seen in a long time. I've seen this book many times over the past several years and only gave it a passing interest. However, after much comparison with other systems of card reading, I have found this to be one of the ultimate sources of traditional card reading. Any one interested in traditional card reading should have this book on hand; not only as a reference, but as a basis for all card reading. Most books/teachers base their systems upon this work. Unfortunately, it is not given the credit that it deserves. This is an EXCELLENT resource for beginner and 'experts' alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the top two guides to playing card divination, December 11, 2003
By A Customer
I became interested after learning that the original use of our 52 playing card deck was for divining the future and fortune telling , a somewhat nobler use than our current practice of using them for gambling and games(which is one of the reasons a bad reputation was placed on them in the first place). Also for those who don't own or can't afford a Tarot deck, it's interesting to note our 52 deck is decended from the "Minor Arcana" of the Tarot cards. This guide is actually the best, having very good in-depth descriptions for each card. The second best book is "Playing Card Divination For Beginers" by Richard Webster, which has a slightly different aproach to reading the cards, but not the detailed descriptions as Dee Nerys book. Both of these guides are your best bet on the art of Cartomancy.

This book gives details for 7 spreads: the Mystical Cross, the Horseshoe of Fate, the Pyramid, the Romany Way, the Magic Square, the Celestial Circle and the Heart's Desire.

The chapter on suits gives 4 aspects: traditional, practical, psychological and psychic. Diamonds are spring, Clubs are summer, Hearts are autumn, Spades are winter.

I found it very interesting that the calendar assignments start with March 1 and the Ace, followed in descending order by the King-Queen-Jack-10 etc.
