Book Description

0979420849 978-0979420849 May 1, 2009
The Early Renaissance game of Tarot inspired poetry centuries before it was used for fortune telling. The poems in Fortune's Lover do not explain the Tarot so much as spin off from it.

From accounts of a master class on the Fool that led to the author inadvertently putting into practice the grace they'd just learned about to an insane Merlin predicting three forms of death for the same boy, from a princess who learns never to look to any man to protect or fight for her to a High Priestess locked in her temple of silence, these poems are infused with a wisdom based not so much in finding the right answers as in asking the right questions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tarot enchantment, May 3, 2009
This review is from: Fortune's Lover: A Book of Tarot Poems (Perfect Paperback)

A small book that slips easily into the pocket, Fortune's Lover will be treasured by poetry lovers, tarotists, and aficionados of Rachel Pollack's previous work. Speaking in a wise, gentle voice, Pollack in her poems reveals a life steeped in tarot lore. The poems themselves are evocative meditations on trumps chosen from a variety of decks. Each poetic gem glitters with facets of Kabbalistic lore, folk tale and fairytale, magic and mythology, and all are imbued with the psychological insight and humor characteristic of her books. If poetry, to quote Coleridge, is "the best words, in the best order", then Pollack's simple, laid back yet sophisticated verse ranks high. This fine little book leaves one yearning for more.
