Product Description

Double "live" CD from their 2008 tour of Europe

In 2008, the band toured Europe in celebration of forty years in the business. Fortyfied is a double-CD that was recorded on that tour, and it achieves two things: It's a wonderful retrospective of Nektar's considerable backlog, and it showcases the band's musicianship. --sea of tranquility

I've been a fan of this band for decades. You can read my comments on some of their other releases. Today, however, I want to speak about this release & provide the potential buyer a note of caution.

The songs are taken from various live performances during the 2008 European tour. The shows may have been wonderful but the recordings are amazingly poor. The dynamics are flat, there is no separation of instruments, oftentimes the singing is barely audible. At times it seems as if there was a sock placed over the one recording microphone. Someone may pose the argument that these are sacrifices one must make to turn out a live album. Bollocks! This product was made "on the cheap" and it shows.

There are other NEKTAR live recordings available on CD such as "Live in New York" and "Sunday Night at London Roundhouse. They were recorded 30 years ago yet the production quality is vastly superior. Given the relative state of the art of live music recording between these two disparate time periods, you should rightly question how they ended up producing better sounding live albums over one-quarter of a century ago compared to this, their most recent "Fortyfied"? I submit to you my best guess: because back then someone cared about quality.

Judging by the turnout of their 2009 European tour (1 week, 7 performances), this may well be the last anyone will ever hear of the current incarnation of NEKTAR. If so, it's a shame that "Fortyfied" is being offered as their final statement. They had a chance to go out with a fabulous-sounding swan song. Instead, they left behind this muddied death rattle.

This release is simply one of the finest live releases it has been my pleasure to own. I just recently saw this band in New York performing the exact same set and it was note for note the same as this live release. Nektar combine highly technical arrangements with just the right mix of melody and hooks to produce what I think is simply one of the best live releases ever made. I personally have a large collection of CD's to compare it against (around 8,000) and this one is off the charts a favorite of mine. It is a walk through the band's extensive back catalogue, if you buy one CD all year and like melodic/progressive rock music you will love this band. They are fantastic in concert as this CD will prove. This Cd combines old favorites like King of Twilight and Desolation Valley with newer tracks like Where are you now which soars and of course their biggest hit Remember the future part 2. BUY IT, you will be SO glad you did!
