South Florida's Maruta are one of the younger grindcore upstarts like Gaza or Magrudergrind, that offer originality as well as good ol' bone crunching grind, that extreme metal fans worldwide should embrace! Maruta take a page from seemingly every grindcore playbook you could think of, and concoct this noise that's both familiar, but wholly original! You hear traces of Napalm Death, Brutal Truth, Terrorizer, Pig Destroyer, Discordance Axis, Ed-Gein, and Kill the Client, without ever sounding like any of them!!! Lead singer Mitchell Luna (who patrols live sex webcams as his other job! Hence the pun) has a deep guttural growl and a high screech as his chosen vocal assault, and is pretty excellent in his delivery! The guitar work by Eduardo Borja is awesome and really the high point of the album for me. I love the low-tuned dissonant approach, not very thrashy, much more an all encompassing sound, like a swarm of locusts. He utilizes a ton of harmonics, and the interplay between he and Luna is tight, you can tell they write as a band. Kudos for also having audible bass thats playing counterpoint to the guitar while also augmenting already pummeling drums! And the drums! He's not Danny Herrera, or Rich Hoak, but Daniel Morris is better than most. The timing isn't always standard which is great because it creates a sense of danger, anything can happen at any time! This is most certainly the best grindcore album I've heard this year, including Rotten Sound's "Cursed". If you like grind, get this album right now!!! In Narcosis was good, this is great, I can't wait to hear what they have next!
