The software runs in internet explorer as an active-x so the cameras be used with standard web-cam type software. Well I couldn't figure out how anyway.
Using IE just adds to the memory load and reduces the reliability of the system. Also the Active-X and Internet explorer combination gets to be a real CPU hog when running 4 cameras with motion detect on, so use a decent PC if that is your plan. The software has a bunch of features, but also is buggy sometimes, which is one more reason I would love to use stand alone web-cam software....
The night vision is good for close monitoring, as is the lens of the cameras, but far away isn't great so don't think your going to make out a face from 50' away.
Bottom-line: They do what they say, are inexpensive and they have been out in a barn for 6 months running with no problems other than needing to reboot the PC every few days...
The web interface and ActiveX control are terrible. The administrative config menus are buggy and slow, but eventually they get the job done. The worst thing for me is that sound in the ActiveX control doesn't work properly with IE9 on Windows 7 (64). So for me, the camera has no audio in either direction. I ended up using third-party software rather than stick with the buggy built-in web interface, but as far as I can see, Foscam only supports sound through their own proprietary ActiveX control and none of the third-party tools support their custom sound interface.
Bottom line: If all your PCs are old, or if you don't care about audio, then you'll love this camera.
I purchased this camera in an attempt to find something that would perform better than the Logitech WiLife system I got in closeout, this gave constant connection drops via the ethernet over home wiring setup. The Foscam I8909W camera has good night vision but no way to turn off the LEDS. The power indicator and all the LEds are positioned on the front of the camera so if you want to point it outside the thing will blind itself. That is to be expected, though, since it IS a night camera. However, the power indicator and data transmit lights should be able to be turned off. Electrical tape does take care of this issue.
Maybe this is just the camera I received but I can't get it to maintain a connection for anything. I have it pointed out a front window and constantly the connection drops. If I try to connect directly to the camera via IP I get extremely sluggish response times. Changing the resolution or FPS does not seem to help. It seems to have less issue when connected directly to my router but one would think the wifi would be able to handle the data being transmitted. The camera and router are no more than 25 feet apart with out any actual obstacles or walls in between the two.Read more ›
Of the 2 FI8909W cams, one of them works reliably but the other developed transmission issues and locks-up after a period of a week. I think I traced the lock-up to motion detection. Initially within the first 6 months of use I never had any issues using the same setting/location and motion detection activity; however recently, I've either had to unplug the unit or turn off motion detection to have it work "reliably". Unplugging the unit essentially rebooting the camera fixes the issue but if motion detection is left on, it will stop working after 3-4 days (photos/motion are being triggered and emails sent during this timeframe)and then I'll have to reboot by unplugging the unit. So I've finally decided to turn off motion detection and after 1 week of use it hasn't locked up yet.
If I didn't have a need for a thinner profile camera, I'd only purchase the FI8918W cameras. But at least my other FI8909W works reliably--and it has been transmitting over a greater distance and through walls.
-the picture quality is on par with the other Foscams I have (There is a tiny bit longer delay in transmiting the image over my other Foscams)
I Don't Like:
-The antenna is ridged (L-shaped only), my FI8918W antenna can change directions -The power light on the face of the camera can't be turned off (and the power supply also has a light on it too)
I have the video working fine, now I just need to figure out the audio. The volume is very low on my desktop computers, strangely the audio is louder on my android phone. And I haven't gotten the mic to work yet.

I bought this as a trial unit and I am currently using it. It is functional but best suited for daylight use. The infrared capabilities are limited and the software is basic. Read morePublished 3 months ago by Matthew Chan

Got a couple of these. The stands are a joke. One I have mounted in the carport; LEDs are inadequate as the sole source of light at night. Read morePublished 12 months ago by shu
Nice product, bought in USA and installed in Costa Rica. Movement alerts via email work perfectly. Looking forward to buy another one.Published 12 months ago by Diego
picture quality is moderate. Anyone who is moving faster then a slow walk is blurry. It gets confused at night and doesn't always turn on the ir.Published 13 months ago by Jeff Olson
It's pretty good with night vision and speaker. My only problem is that its a bit slow on the activation through remote service. Read morePublished 13 months ago by Greg Norton
