Book Description

March 2, 2008
Even people with the barest interest in Broadway can recognize the unique, angular, sensual style of Bob Fosse. With its small gestures and isolated movements, it is frequently copied--and often misinterpreted.

For there is far more to it than bowler hats and white gloves, which is why choreographer Debra McWaters has put together the ultimate visual and verbal guide to Fosse's way of dancing, choreographing, and teaching.

Using hundreds of photographs, as well as descriptions from Fosse himself, McWaters guides dancers and teachers through the process of understanding the intricacies of this style of jazz dance. An assistant to Gwen Verdon on Fosse, a long-time associate of Ann Reinking, and personal choreographer for Ben Vereen, McWaters is uniquely situated to write this book.

The Fosse Style provides facts, not guesswork, about how to execute Fosse's signature movements, information handed down from an illustrious list of artists and performers. It closes with a sample dance featuring Fosse's signature moves. No dancer or fan of such shows as The Pajama Game, Damn Yankees!, Sweet Charity, Cabaret, Pippin, or Chicago can afford to be without this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic easy to follow book with great pictures, December 3, 2008
This review is from: The Fosse Style (Paperback)
This is truly a fantastic book. Ms. McWaters passes on the nuances of the Fosse style (learned for such Fosse greats as Ann Reinking, and Gwen Verdon) in a remarkably easy to follow manner, masterfully illustrated by pictures that clearly demonstrate and illustrate every move. I have had the opportunity to see Fosse's choreography numerous times but could not tell EXACTLY what the dancers were doing - now I can and so can anyone who reads the book. If you love Fosse's work you will love this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book!, December 2, 2008
This review is from: The Fosse Style (Paperback)
This book was terrific!! I loved reading a book about the actual Fosse Technique instead of just about Bob Fosse's life. This book was written by the Assistant Choreographer of Chicago and Fosse on Broadway and actually walks you step by step through the Fosse style. I learned so much! A must for any dancer!

5.0 out of 5 stars great book for beginner or expert, December 29, 2008
This review is from: The Fosse Style (Paperback)
My wife has been obsessed with the dancing of Fosse after seeing Cabaret, so I bought this book as a gift for her. She absolutely loves it. The book is simplistic enough for her as a beginner to be slinking around the house in the characteristic Fosse style. Plus, one of our daughter's college friends is a theater major in college and has borrowed it and found it to be helpful in learning the dance style. I was skeptical after reading the negative review here on amazon, but found the book to be well-written and it was able to teach my novice wife and a theater student some new dance moves. Overall - highly recommended.
