5.0 out of 5 stars Bold, simple, summery watch. Shorts and beach not included., April 1, 2010

This review is from: Fossil Men's CH2588 Decker Gray Chronograph Silicone Strap Silver Dial Watch (Watch)
My own measurements:
Diameter = 42.44mm
Diameter including crown = 47.00mm
Band width = 22mm
Weight = 3.3oz

PROS:

-The Sunburst face:
What separates model from the rest of Fossil's Decker line is the understated 'Sunburst' dial - the plastic gray has been replaced with a classy, radially-brushed aluminum face which compliments the steel and overall aesthetic of the "Decker" perfectly! Even the three sub-dials have sunburst reflections. I had originally purchased a Decker with the *standard gray* face (CH2594); nearly identical except for the plain and 'plasticy' looking face, it was fine... until I saw this! I returned the CH2594, bought this CH2588 (for half the cost here on AMAZON, btw) and in comparison, the sunburst face looks at LEAST twice the cost and character. The overall effect of the sunburst is lighter than the standard gray, making it even more perfect for a summer watch. I've uploaded some pictures to help show off what I'm talking about. It just looks fantastic, subtly catching the light just enough to make it interesting but not so much as to be overly flashy.

-Besides the sunburst face, the watch has a thin, non-rotating tachymeter bezel (which you'll never use but looks great), a technical chronograph face that looks clean and not overcrowded, the date at the 4 o'clock position, and a bold steel case that's polished on the sides/back and 'maned-up' with a light brushing on the front. A perfect balance, and why I chose Decker. It should also be noted that all 6 hands and all 12 hour markers are painted with a white glow-in-the dark compound.

-The strap:
The CH2588 comes with a 22mm wide, toollessly removable, gray silicone strap (model # AMS101) - one of Fossil's mix-and-match straps. I have to admit that I've never been a fan of rubber straps as they always feel stiff and look cheap, but that's not a problem here. The silicone is soft, flexible, and embellished with stitching to make it so much more than just a rubber strap. For $25 (or less if you shop around) you can buy the same strap in any of 5 additional colors: Black, White, Blue, Green, and Yellow, but honestly gray looks best, adding a great deal to the overall summery appeal.

The neatest thing about this strap is it's built in removal mechanism. I've uploaded a picture to help illustrate this, but basically there's a tiny 1mm knob protruding from each spring-bar which can be pulled back with your finger-nail to compress and release the bar. When on your wrist, these knobs swing out of the way into the gap between the band and the strap. Very cool! Makes it easy to switch out with another style/color.

-Chronograph Function:
The Decker chronograph measures time in 10th's of a second UP TO *1 hour* - after one hour is stops. This, my friends, is a good thing. I've had other Fossil watches that continue indefinitely running down the battery when you forget to stop them... and you will forget to stop them. Functionally, 10th's of a second are tracked in the top sub-dial, minutes in the left, and seconds in the bottom. Start/stop above the crown, lap/reset below. Pretty much your standard chronograph watch. The 1/10th sub-dial spins continuously for the first minute after pressing start then falls back to zero, at which point 10th's are counted internally and recalled whenever you hit stop or lap (to save battery). If any of the sub-dials lose sync with zero position, they can easily be re-zeroed in time set mode.

CONS:

-Like many affordable watches, the primary second hand does not perfectly match up with second marks on the dial. I've held a couple Deckers and the variance differs from watch to watch. The one I'm wearing now is close enough at about 0.1~0.2mm ahead.

-The minute and second sub-dials are mechanically linked - when reset is pressed, the second hand has to spin furiously to wind the minute hand back (or forward) to zero. It doesn't take *too* long to do this, but it could get annoying if you use the stopwatch frequently.

-If you plan on using your own strap or a snap on leather cuff, there's a down side to the integrated watch band spring bar removal knobs being permanently attached to the strap: you'll have to supply your own spring bars when using your own strap (or hope your strap comes with a set - most do, but cuffs do not).

-Luminance on the glow-in-the-dark hands lasts less than half an hour and certainly won't help you through the night. In contrast, my Citizen Men's BL8000-54L Eco-Drive Calibre 8700 Perpetual Calendar Watch glows straight through 'till morning.

Despite these few nitpicky annoyances, this is still a 5 star timepiece, and at at this price it's an absolute steal!
