It's either the Holy Grail for the 'True Believers', or more Grist for the Mill for the 'Debunkers'.

Whichever camp you belong to, both must agree that the information and photos in this book are amazing.

Mr. Slaughter was a proffessor and director of the Ellis W. Shuler Museum of Paleontology at SMU prior to his death. This book (published in 1996) was one of his last projects.

The work is a 'Coffee Table' book that is a fairly short read.

My main complaint with the book is that for all of the incredible information in it, it lacks any in-depth analyisis of the discoveries. Also, finding any dates for these reported discoveries is like looking for teeth in a Hen (or an Alien - see chapter One).

Rating the book is almost impossible. If only one of his discoveries can be confirmed the book deserves 5 stars +, if not 1 star would be to good for it.

After reading the book, I can make the following observations:

1) The book has languished in near obscurity since it was published.

2) Professor Slaughter was a legitimate Scientist/Paleontologist prior to his death.

3) Faking the discoveries/artifacts/skeletons would have cost him thousands of dollars (they don't appear to be cheap knock-offs).

4) Every chapter has several clear, quality black & white photos of the fossil remains (Debunkers won't find any of the out-of-focus or grainy photos they like to point to).

5) The information in the book is original. You won't find references to the discoveries or copies of the photos in other books by other authors.

So in conclusion, if you have an interest in Aliens, Faries, Leprechauns, Pan, Neptoids, etc., if you are tired of finding the same 'rehashing' of information on this material by other authors and would like to see photos of their reported fossilized remains, then buy this book. You won't find access to it's information any where else.

Uh, duh. The other review of this fascinating book missed the point entirely. A brilliant paleontologist as well as an imaginative writer, Slaughter intended his last opus for fun, for those who have a background in fossils and those who have an interest in myths and fairy tales. No, there is no "proof" that any of these things existed. Slaughter put his extraordinary mind and a good illustrator together to produce one of the must delightful books on paleontology since Roy Chapman Andrews hooked generations of kids on T. rex. Don't seek this book out if you want proof of mermaids and dragons, fairies and UFO inhabitants from Peru; get it for joy and expansion of all your childhood fantasies, with willing suspension of disbelief.
