Feel extremely solid and finish is nice.

For a sound test, I played a variety of music through them (Jazz, Classical, Electronic, Rock) and the result is crystal clear.
Aaron Doucett
These are marketed as near field professional monitors, they will compete reasonably well.

Fostex is a Music Company that has been manufacturing recording gear for decades. From their X-18, cassette, 4 track recorder, to their PM 1.0 Powered Studio Monitors, to these slightly smaller, Powered Studio speakers, I have had somewhat limited experience with the Brand. First, a little technical detail: these are active speakers, priced as a pair, that have a volume control nob on each (L & R) speaker, an "On/Off" toggle on each speaker, and RCA and 1/4" TRS inputs on each speaker. It may be obvious, but there are no grills on the faces of these. For those who care, Active refers to the fact that each of the two drivers is individually powered by a separate amplifier, self-contained in the speaker enclosure, making the Speaker's crossover effectively "external". Because each speaker has its own amplification, both speakers require a standard 120 Volt, outlet and come with a captive power cord. Unlike some "cheaper" alternatives, these monitors do not have a proprietary, connecting cable that runs from one speaker to the other.

As to the performance, I love these without reservation! But I have to admit: I use the PM 0.4's for a "less mainstream" application than most people. While often used as a computer desktop monitoring system, or for recording playback, I use these in my main audio system, with a simple cd player and preamp, connected to the PM 0.4's via a pair of 10 foot, RCA to 1/4" cables. The preamp acts as a volume control, and switching device. The speakers can be stand mounted, and are very well built, and surprisingly heavy, for powered monitors in the "under $200 dollar a pair" range. And there is little competition for the price at which these are offered.

I've been around the world of broadcast for a while and this is a steal. I have not had these long so I can't speak to the long term operation. I can say I have purchased hundreds of speakers and many Fostex 6301B's for work; this pair I bought for a project and I'm keeping them for myself. The price/performance quality ratio is huge. These are marketed as near field professional monitors, they will compete reasonably well.
Here is the rub for someone who would purchase these for a computer system; consider putting the speakers on a power strip that you can turn off when your not using them. Unlike the 6301's the power buttons are on the back, so they will likely just stay on. For the price, I think this is the ideal use for these high quality and loud speakers/monitors. The units wire discreetly, AKA you don't connect them like many computer speakers (connecting one side that has the amp and a 6' extention to another speaker). Each powers via a real power cable (no wall warts) and you connect via RCA or TRS to each.

I spent a lot of time doing research before deciding what speakers to buy. Basically I was looking for a great all round speaker to use for my TV, iPod and computer. I love music of all varieties and wanted something that would have a super sound across the board. I also wanted something that had gusto - something that screamed to the neighbors "Hey look at me I'm rocking out".

I found the quest for the perfect speaker very frustrating, what one website said was good, another website said was bad. And consumers also could not seem to agree on which speakers gave the best bang for your buck. So I turned to my expert, a great friend who's also a sound person. He books bands and put on their shows. He recommended these speakers to me.

The way he describes them "they are basically a studio monitor of excellent quality at an amazing price point". I decided to go with it. And I haven't regretted it. These speakers are amazing. The sound quality is phenomenal - crystal clear piano to smooth guitar to sweet vocals...you name it - it sounds fantastic !! I highly recommend these speakers.

So lets make the point. If you buy these speakers you are looking reasonably prices studio monitors with flat response that fit in a desk. If you are looking for boomy bass, buy speakers with bigger dome or buy a hi-fi system with a subwoofer.

Response is good overall. Cristal clear treble, I love the tweet's sound. Decent bass for the size of dome (don't expect any response below ~80 Hz), clear mediums and very detailed sound at normal volume levels. You can hear reverb tails appropriately. They are not substitute for reference studio monitors...but hey, you are paying $130, not $600 for a couple of Genelec's

I have to say that for this price, the quality of these speakers is awesome. Feel extremely solid and finish is nice. Big heat sink on the back and noise free TRS connections.

Additionally, I have to say that these are real active monitors, that is, they have an independent amplifier for the dome and for the tweeter. This is not very common on speakers this cheap.

I would recommend them to any home studio musician in a budget...and to anybody that is thinking about buying a crappy ipod base. Real speakers sound much better!!

I`m very impressed with this pair of little devils. I really could not imagine how good they were, since fostex is not delivered in my country - Brasil. I strongly recomend them to anyone who has little cash, but wants more than just hear some home-made demos in the homestudio monitors.
