This review is from: Fo'tet Augmented (Audio CD)
The lead voices are clarinet (Don Byron) and vibes Bryan Carrot)--I like the way these two instruments combine (see BG and Hamp) and with Ralph Peterson swiniging away in the background, everything is in place for some fine jazz. And everybody delivers.

Byron and Peterson made albums in the early 90s and this CD has the feeling of a happy and loose reunion. There is a nice, open sound on this session, with Byron at his inventive best for chorus after chorus. A highlight is Joe Henderson's Shade of jade (why don't today's artists mine the compositions of their Blue Note forbears more often--there are some gems by Mobley waiting to be explored). Anyway, thanks Criss Cross for once again brining us some great modern jazz.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love The Fo'tet, November 19, 2011

The Fo'tet is built on a powerful-but-subtle interaction between Don Byron's clarinet, Bryan Carrot's vibes and the up-front drums of the leader. It's a very compelling sound, constantly shifting, never settles on one mood for too long. Great stuff!

PS - This group's 1989 CD "Ralph Peterson Presents The Fo'tet" is on my all-time "Not Famous Enough" list. And features its own version of "Johnny Come Lately". Check it out!
