3.0 out of 5 stars Works But Not A Great Product, January 11, 2010
This review is from: Fotodiox Lens Mount Adapter, Nikon Lens to MFT Micro 4/3 (Four Thirds) System Camera Mount Adapter, Olympus Pen E-PL1, E-P2, Panasonic Lumix DMC-G1, G2, GH2, GF1, GH1 G10, (Electronics)
I would rate this product at 3.5 stars so it was hard for me to decide 3 or 4. However, I decided on 3 because even at half the price (which is where I think it should be priced), I would give it 4 stars. So 3 it is.

Let me start by saying that it works. Also, the quality is not as bad as I thought after reading some other reviews. Until I received it, I was thinking I would not even attach it to the camera. However, it was better than I expected so I pressed ahead.

It is an all metal part so that is a start. However, the part that attaches to the camera is not stainless steel like the Voigtlander and Panasonic DMW-MA2M G Series Micro Four Thirds Lens Mount Adapter for Panasonic Leica M lenses NEW! adapters have. This might be the reason for the following two items that I don't like. First it doesn't rotate around smoothly and there is not a satisfying click that it is in place. (I also worry that the black paint will rub off onto my camera mount) Second, once in place it seems to shift around a worrisome amount. I did put on my m43 lenses and they moved also, so it may just seem worse because the Nikon lenses are bigger and heavier.

Once the ring is on the camera, it is time to put the lenses on. They mount just as any F lenses mount on a Nikon which is to say, line up the Nikon white line with the red dot on the right side of the mount (when looking at it mounted on the camera) and rotate counter clock wise. (Please Note: That there is no way to control the aperture of G series lenses with this adaptor so I would recommend against using them unless you want to shoot at the smallest aperture all of the time.)

Once installed, I had no problem focusing and the adaptor performed fine. However, taking off the lens resulted in another problem for this adaptor. The little release mechanism is very poorly designed and I had a very hard time getting to it because it was blocked by the lens. Also, when I finally was able to get to it, it didn't seem so ready to release the lens. After a little fiddling, I got it to release but this is a big negative.

Overall, this product works but I am not satisfied with it. I will keep it until I can get the Voigtlander F adapter for 2.5 times the price of this. Please allow me to make a tangential comment about these adapters. I think all of them are outrageously priced. Nikon can sell a fantastic 50mm f/1.8 for only 1.8 times the price of this item and for half the price of the Panasonic version. That is astounding to me. I feel the correct price of a very nicely constructed adaptor should be around $70-100. That is why I tired this adaptor because it is priced where I think this should be. However, this turned item turned out to cost about twice what it is worth.

Overall at 1/2 the current price this product would no longer be a ripoff but I am very picky about my camera gear so it still would not be the adaptor for me. This is an important piece of information about me to judge whether you think it is worth it or not. It works but it is a little like putting steel rims on a luxury car. They work but they are not optimal or stylish.

As a final note, it is worth getting an adaptor as I love shooting with my Nikon Lenses. It works very well and is very refreshing to just get back to aperture, shutter speed, focus basics.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor Quality, February 20, 2010

I started to freak out when I couldn't remove this from my $1400 Nikon 80-400mm Lens! Pressing the button and twisting did not work. It was stuck! The button isn't designed well.. it rolls to one side and won't ever get fully depressed using your finger tip. Eventually I used a small screw driver to fully press the button and I was able to remove it from my lens. I will continue to bring a screw driver in my camera bag until i find a better quality adapter.

This sucker is made of cheap metal. I have it attached to a 50mm F1.8 and cannot get the adapter off for the life of me. I'm glad I don't need the lens for any other setup and I have no other nikon lenses, so I guess I'm ok. It's a flawed design in my opinion.
From a technical standpoint, it does the job and at a fraction of the price compared to other adapters. You get what you pay for.
