5.0 out of 5 stars This works great
I was hesitant to buy this adapter since the few reviews were not very enthusiastic. But I was anxious to try using my 300mm Nikkor lens on my Canon DSLR. And for $30 why not try it?

The lens adapter is all metal and fits nicely between the lens and the camera. The lens has to be used only in aperture priority and in manual focus but I usually use this lens...

I am quite pleased with the pictures taken using this adapter on my Canon DSLR's (both the 40D and the Rebel XT). I would not hesitate to recommend adding one of these adapters to your camera bag.

I wish the little tab you use to unlock the adapter from the lens were a bit more solidly-built; it feels like it might break after maybe 100+ operations. This is the reason (among several others) that I'm buying a few more units of this adapter, so I can just attach one to each of my Nikon manual lenses and leave them there.

Overall, for the price they're perfectly fine. I can't justify spending $150 apiece for the competing brands, not right now at least. I'm hoping I won't be proven wrong in the long run :)

This review is from: Fotodiox Lens Mount Adapter, Nikon Lens to Canon EOS Camera Adapter, for Canon EOS 1d,1ds,Mark II, III, IV, 5D, Mark II, 7D, 10D, 20D, 30D, 40D, 50D, 60D, Digital Rebel xt, xti, xs, xsi, t1i, t2i, 300D, 350D, 400D, 450D, 500D, 550D, 1000D (Electronics)
This adapter suffers from a design flaw. I will get to in a minute which Nikon/EOS adapter to get.

When I turn the focusing ring of a manual focus lens, or an autofocus lens functioning as a manual focus, I expect only the ring to move. With the Fotodiox there is excessive play (> 5 deg) between the lens and the adapter. When you turn the focusing ring with a Nikon AUTOfocus lens mounted, the lens will move first with respect to the adapter before the focusing ring does. I don't know about others but to me this is unacceptable. When I turn the focusing ring I expect only the ring to move. With AI-S (manual focus) lenses, the play is a little less (about 2 degrees), but in both cases there is not just rotational play between the lens and adapter which is hugely annoying but will probably not affect the final image, even worse, there is also a tiny bit of play in the angle the optical axis makes with the image plane. This *does* affect image quality as I have verified. Think 'view camera' where the plane of focus is not parallel to the image plane (sensor). At first I couldn't explain the loss of sharpness even with a stellar Nikon lens like the 17-35/2.8 on my 5d, but after some trial and error I pinned it down to misalignment between the focal plane and the sensor. This is simply not acceptable on any lens adapter regardless of cost.

Now that we know what the flaw is, what to do? Well, it turns out are two generic Nikon/EOS adapter designs out there. Most importers (Fotodiox included) order these from China and put their own logo on it. I have an adapter *identical* to the Fotodiox that I got from eBay(tons of those out there) except it doesn't have the Fotodiox name. You can tell this design from the presence of a little black spring loaded lever that you press to unattach the lens from the adapter. This is the flawed design and the one to avoid.

The other (costs about the same) has a little square tab with a hole in the middle which you push/pull to mount/ unmount the lens from the adapter. I own one of these as well. There is almost zero play with the lens mounted on this. It fits tightly and is a pleasure to focus with. This is the one to get. These are also plentifully available on eBay.

Needless to say, my Fotodiox is going back to Amazon.

This is not meant for moving between lenses. Construction doesn't hold up over repeated use; the tab is pretty weak. Also doesn't enable wide-angle (28mm and below) lenses to adapt to the Canon body.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great adapter, July 9, 2010

I own 4 of these adapters to mount Nikon Nikkor Non-Ai and Ai lenses to my Canon 7D, on which they mount with zero play.
The people who criticize these adapters because they are loose - it is not the fault of the adapter but the lens mount on the lens. I had one adapter on a Vivitar Series One 70-210mm in a Nikon mount and it was a bit loose, but when the same adapter was put on a Nikon 24mm Ai lens, it fit perfectly tight. All my FotoDiox adapters are on Nikon Nikkor Non-Ai and Ai lenses and the fit perfectly tight.
Do not plan on moving these adapters from lens to lens - they are not made for that type of abuse.
There are a number of respected HDSLR bloggers who give the FotoDiox high marks over many other more pricey adapters.
These adapters are intended for use with manual lenses only.

Got this adapter to use a Nikon 50mm 1.2 on my canon 5D. It went on easy, it locks in place tightly I get no movement from the lens while on the camera and the constitution of the adapter is good as advertised. When you want to remove the adapter it comes off the lens easily by pushing the small tab up and a slight turn.
It's great to able to use my old Nikon lenses on my Canon for stills or video. Going to try a Hasselbald adapter next.

3.0 out of 5 stars save $5, or not, September 10, 2009
This review is from: Fotodiox Lens Mount Adapter, Nikon Lens to Canon EOS Camera Adapter, for Canon EOS 1d,1ds,Mark II, III, IV, 5D, Mark II, 7D, 10D, 20D, 30D, 40D, 50D, 60D, Digital Rebel xt, xti, xs, xsi, t1i, t2i, 300D, 350D, 400D, 450D, 500D, 550D, 1000D (Electronics)
would agree with the [...] review: attachment/removal are easy enough and the slight rotational play of mounted lenses seems innocuous. can't imagine why anyone would buy one of the >$200 versions. looking forward to using my old Nikkor PC lens on a new Canon body. (if memory serves, i had to use stop-down metering with that lens on my F2 as well.) may even try coupling this adapter with a reversing ring for extreme macro use.[...].

update: my suggestion to buy direct from Fotodiox on e-bay and save $5 apparently gets edited out by Amazon. what should i expect? anyway, the Fotodiox "Pro" version of this product (~$75 on e-bay/~$85 here) seems much studier (and likely to stand up to repeated attachment/removal) and doesn't have the same (~1mm?) lens-to-body rotational play. much tighter connection, but i'm not sure that's worth the extra bucks. finally, i have not tried the even higher-end "exposure confirmation" versions (with attached chip) out there, but reviews elsewhere express grave concerns about it.

Be careful, it may tend to get stuck if you try it on older Nikon lenses.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worked as described for my purposes, August 22, 2009

This review is from: Fotodiox Lens Mount Adapter, Nikon Lens to Canon EOS Camera Adapter, for Canon EOS 1d,1ds,Mark II, III, IV, 5D, Mark II, 7D, 10D, 20D, 30D, 40D, 50D, 60D, Digital Rebel xt, xti, xs, xsi, t1i, t2i, 300D, 350D, 400D, 450D, 500D, 550D, 1000D (Electronics)
I purchased this adapter with the hope that I could get an old Nikkor-P 1200mm lens to work on my Canon EOS 5D. After doing a bit of research, I learned that one can spend anywhere from $10 to $200 for one of these things, depending on the manufacturer, model, and whether one wants focus confirmation (helpful when shooting in darker conditions). Before shelling out a big chunk of change, I opted for this adapter at $30 - which seemed a reasonable price to pay to just see if these adapters would work as promised. Delivery was prompt. The adapter fit quite nicely on the Nikkor lens, and the adapted lens then fit easily and snugly on the Canon camera. As advertised, this model limits function to manual focus and metering.

Other reviews that I've read suggested that the fit might degrade over time, but I don't expect to be removing this often enough for it to be an issue. There are four tiny screws holding the two main parts of the adapter together which loosened somewhat, but these were easily tightened with a jeweler's screwdriver and I've had no further issues.

For two detailed articles on the this adapter with my 5D, visit my homepage link on my profile.

For the old Nikkor F lenses that I have, I think this model adapter works just fine, and I have no problem with the lack of focus confirmation that the higher priced models provide.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really good., November 3, 2011

This review is from: Fotodiox Lens Mount Adapter, Nikon Lens to Canon EOS Camera Adapter, for Canon EOS 1d,1ds,Mark II, III, IV, 5D, Mark II, 7D, 10D, 20D, 30D, 40D, 50D, 60D, Digital Rebel xt, xti, xs, xsi, t1i, t2i, 300D, 350D, 400D, 450D, 500D, 550D, 1000D (Electronics)
This is truly an amazing product at a more amazing price. If you look around here in the nikon to eos adapters you can find insane prices such as the NOVOFLEX brand, I've used one before when working on a production and I really wasn't that amazed, it actually was harder to take off the lenses than these Fotodiox mounts are.

I understand that there is a fear that these have a fragile clasp that actually holds the adapter to the lens and I somewhat agree. I examined it an it really is just a simple flexing piece of metal (about the same thickness as a paperclip) so I am somewhat afraid of an eventual breakdown, but with careful opening (when possible) it will be okay, but I bought two and will probably buy more so that I can just leave the mounts onto the lenses to prevent possible damage to the clasp, and I recommend this as the best option.

Now, when I bought the adapter I was reading reviews as to what they will adapter or if there was any sort of issue I would face. Someone said that they won't accurately mount to a 28mm lens or wider and this is incorrect. I mounted it to my 28mm Nikkor lens and there is no issue of any kind, mainly because a Nikon mount is always a Nikon mount no matter the lens and an EOS body is always an EOS body no matter the model.

I'll probably end up editing this and uploading a video review of the product.
