This is a heavy duty softbox, very high quality material.

Not something I will be taking down a lot and it's not an overly quick set up, but for a large octagon softbox for my home studio it works like a charm.

It took a couple practice runs of putting it together, but once I figured it out, I could assemble it fairly quickly.

I was very happy when I received this softbox, along with another Fotodiox softbox which I will be reviewing separately, as a gift. It provides excellent light, packs very flat, and is extremely well made and durable. Best part is, it's huge. With a 400 Watt studio light I can light whole people with that excellent, wraparound light that you get from a softbox. And, since it is very transportable I can take it this outstanding modifier wherever I go. It's like having portable sunlight!

My only "issue" was that it took a bit longer to set up than I would like. The annoyance is you need to feed eight metal rods into the adapter and they can get jumbled up as you are trying to do that. At home it's not that big an issue but if I'm setting up in front of someone the last thing I want them to see is me wrestling with equipment. Fortunately I was able to come up with a simple and inexpensive fix that allows me to go from bag to completely set up in under two minutes. All you need are a few feet of tape, either duct tape or (slightly better) JVCC GAFF30YD Premium Grade 30 Yard Gaffers Tape: 2 in. x 30 yds. (Black) and eight pieces 1" x 2" pieces of hook-side (non-fuzzy) Velcro, for example from Velcro Brand Industrial Strength Tape (2 Inches X 4 Feet) - Black. The video I've provided shows what you need to do.

I also substituted eight hooks from two sets of

I'm writing this review after 3 months of use and it's still the best bang for your buck you can get. The quality was a lot better than I expected. The material is very strong and has a nice inner diffuser. Although I don't like the connections they use for the inner diffuser, I'll probably replace those clips. It doesn't come with instructions, but it doesn't take an engineering degree to understand exactly how it works. I wonder if these people also have problems using common umbrellas. It is a little heavy paired with my Alien Bee 800 so a medium duty light stand is a must. Anyone complaining about this deal needs to take their $35 bucks back and go put it towards a $1000 Elinchrom Octobox. I see the potential for poking the rods through the seams, but if you don't act like the Hulk I'm sure I'll be fine and even if you do it's an easy fix. I gave it 5 stars because I didn't buy a Kia and expect it to be a Mercedes, however there are still millions of happy Kia owners. Buy it without regrets.

Recently, I've been trying to find ways to improve my photography at my home studio. In the past, I used my new Alien Bee 800 with either a shoot-through or a reflective umbrella. The results were not too good using a white wall as a background. Hard shadows affected the composition of the portrait and faces always ended up a bit shiny. So I decided to invest in a good but affordable softbox. I went to Amazon and decided on the Fotodiox Pro 48" Octagon Softbox based on good reviews and price (only $50).

As usual, after buying a new piece of equipment or accessory, I recorded a video review of the product so other potential buyers can benefit from it. I had to split my videos into two parts due to length. You can find both of them in my youtube channel. I posted part 2 here in Amazon because it includes the review section.

Let's start with the materials. The main part of the softbox is made of heavy duty leather-ish heat resistant material; while the rods and speedring are made of durable metal. For the price, I was very happy to see that all the pieces were made of good and durable quality materials.

However, as soon as I started installing the softbox, my mood started changing. The fact is that the installation process was extremely difficult. Once you have the thin edge of the rods in the velcro pockets, a lot of strength and effort was required to insert the other edge into the speedring holes. It also angered me that the people at Fotodiox neglected to include a simple instruction sheet or some tips to help with the assembly. Finally, the uninstallation of the softbox was a painful process too. Again the problem was taking the rods out of the speedring. I think this softbox was designed to be more of a permanent accessory instead of a portable one.

I battled for awhile with myself trying to figure out whether to get THIS Fotodiox octobox for $65, or to cough up the $160 for the Paul C. Buff octobox for my Alien Bee strobe. i thought to myself, "if it costs a hundred bucks more, it's at least twice as good?!" Being that I am not a pro yet, I'm foolish enough to think that MAYBE, just maybe Paul C. Buff is over-priced and that the Fotodiox octobox would be just as good. Afterall, it's not like I have a million shoots a year where I'm constantly taking the octobox down and putting it back up. BUT, I can say, this thing is constructed really well and if I did, I don't think I would have a problem. By the time this thing would fail, I'd have way more than enough money to purchase the Paul C. Buff octobox. I may not know octoboxes all that well, but I know crappy second-rate material when I see it...THAT DOES NOT APPLY HERE. It's thick and sturdy. It also has an extra diffuser layer, so you can diffuse the light using both panels or just use one panel. All in all, I would buy this again..the fact that I could buy three of these for the price of ONE Paul C. Buff octobox is worth it. I'm not sure how well Paul's is made, but I'd bet money, it's not two times the price worth of difference! Matter of fact, I'm going to buy a few more sizes of the Fotodiox softboxes. I hpe I have helped you...don't let my "going out on a limb" experience be in vein. Grab one and stop hesitating...
