I really wanted to love this flash trigger, however, my first impression was not great. Build quality is subpar, even for a bargain product like this.

Soon after I inserted the batteries, I wanted to change the RF channel in the off chance someone else had the same unit. Dip switch #2 broke on the receiver. Very disgusted, I proceeded to install the unit on my Nex-5R with 16mm lens, and a Nikon SB-700.

SB-700 was set to manual at 1/16th power. Nex-5R set to manual, ISO 400, aperture f5.6, shutter to 1/20. Live View Display - setting effects OFF, WB to flash mode, and flash set to Rear curtain and bounced off white ceiling.

It worked beautifully, flash triggered 100% of the time, however, I was only 5 feet from the flash unit. WB seemed accurate enough, but 1 out of every 10 shots I would get one with a green tint. I'm not sure why this is happening since camera isn't set to AWB. This won't be too much of a problem since I shoot RAW, but it may be for JPEG shooters.

Channel changing isn't that important to me, but I'd still like to be able to flip the 2nd dip switch. Moreover, if the switch broke so easily, what else may break over time? I'll give it another week to see if I can live with the broken switch.

Works intermittently. The receiver just plugs in into the flash slot and is clumsy. I always worry about it breaking. Still in search of a better product for a slave flash..

I have both the Sony NEX-C3 and NEX-5 and love off camera flash. I was excited to get this trigger for the NEX system. My one piece of advise, read the instructions. I put the transmitter on the C3 backwards and it basically fried the camera. Dead! Wouldn't even power up. I know, my fault for not reading the insert that came with the transmitter. Anyway, Sony covered the repair under warranty. Other than that, the product works as described and is a capable unit for the price.

I can't recommend this product. The transmitter doesn't have any surface area or a screw (like the official Sony flashes) to keep it attached to the camera. The edge of a circuit board slips loosely into the port on the top of the NEX, and that's all the support the transmitter gets.

This means it's really finicky to align and plug the transmitter in and really hard to keep it working - any time you bump it, it'll end up sideways, which will either cause the flash to fire randomly, not to fire, or will short out and reboot the camera. Plus, I can't imagine it's good for the flash port or the transmitter to be supporting the weight/force of whatever hits the transmitter all the time.

In addition, the fake mounting hotshoe on the bottom of the receiver is low-quality plastic, poorly made, and has no locking ring, meaning if you try to stick the receiver+speedlight stack in something like an umbrella holder, it's wobbly and lame.

I'd recommend getting a strong NEX -> hotshoe adapter and a CowboyStudio or similar remote trigger over this product. Sure, it's hacky, bigger, and more parts, but it'll also be more reliable and other off-brands have cheaper and more readily available receivers. Since this is just manual anyway (no TTL), you won't lose any functionality.
