The Late Great Jimmy Lee,
By
This review is from: I Found the Doorknob (Audio CD)
Rockabilly pioneer Jimmy Lee Fautheree passed away at age 70 in 2004 soon after the release of this CD recorded with the excellent Deke Dickerson and band. In the 50s Jimmy teamed up with "Country" Johnny Mathis for some classic hillbilly tunes featuring Jimmy's dynamic rockabilly guitar, one of which "Can't Find the Doorknob" has a sequel on this album. Another classic, "Love Me" was recorded with Wayne Walker and a new version (with added bridge) appears here as well. Mostly, however, this CD is of fresh material, new tunes and wisely selected covers that show Jimmy at his best, picking a hot Telecaster and singing straight blues-inflected hillbilly music. Dickerson and band are perfect sidemen. This record sound contemprorary and classic at the same time. This is as good as it gets for an original rockabilly artist recording in the twenty-first century. It is too bad Jimmy passed before gaining more exposure for his contributions. Highly recommended for rockabilly fans, hardcore honky-tonk buffs, and for root music lovers in general.
