Olivia, an enchanting but enigmatic young English girl, sparks an intense case of sibling rivalry between brothers Hamil and Ewan of Edinburgh's prominent Strathearn family. They vie for her attention and affection, and although Olivia gives her heart to Hamil, "the handsome one," she unexpectedly marries Ewan. Dejected and rejected, Hamil enters into a loveless marriage, only to silently covet his brother's wife through years of difficult family encounters. Impulsively traveling to the family villa in Spain where Ewan has retreated to combat his many demons, Hamil is surprised to discover Olivia there alone. Their brief but intense love affair leaves them more passionately committed to each other than ever, yet unable to free themselves from their disastrous marriages. Only after the deaths of both Ewan and his father does Hamil come to realize that time may be running out for the chance to spend the rest of his life with the woman he truly loves. Deft character studies elevate this safely above the standard boymeetsgirl, boylosesgirl fare.
