Great for Reference,
By A Customer
This review is from: Foundation Design: Principles and Practices (Hardcover)
This book starts with a great review of the basics of soil mechanics, and then discusses a wide range of topics such as foundations, bearing walls, footings, deep footings, and many more. Unlike other books, this book is not strictly theory; you can easily apply and understand what this book teaches. It also provides good examples.

Great Textbook, Holds Some Value as a Reference Too,
By bhaladog (Seattle, WA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Foundation Design: Principles and Practices (2nd Edition) (Hardcover)
In short: Best Foundation Design Textbook. (Period).
When I began teaching foundation design for senior-level undergraduates, I reviewed several texts from various authors. I was looking for a text that maximized value for the students: clear explanations of theories, instructive examples and problem sets, relatively current design criteria and practices, and usefulness as a reference *after the course*. I wasn't far from having been a student myself, and was still reeling from spending a couple hundred bucks on a text that may (or may not) have been useful for the course, but was an immediate "sell back" once the course was done. Of all the books I reviewed, Coduto's 2nd Edition fit the bill. NOTE HERE: Get the SECOND EDITION. It is much updated and revised from the First--which is most useful as a door stop. Not only is this book a great textbook, but it will hold value as a reference for the practicing civil engineer. One distinguishing feature is the inclusion of chapters on the structural design of foundations, which makes this a nice resource for more than geotechnical professionals. Note however, that I do not agree that this is the best reference work for foundation engineering and design. For practicing professionals, there is far more information in that regard conatined in (for example) the AASHTO Bridge Design Specifications, or if you're looking for a text--track down Fang's 1991 Edition of the Foundation Engineering Handbook.

This review is from: Foundation Design: Principles and Practices (2nd Edition) (Hardcover)
The book is very useful in my teaching works in the subject foundation engineering. It is very easy to understand especially by the students themselves. I will recommend this as text of the subject in civil engineering. Hoping to purchase more books in some later time.

This book is a very thorough and easy to follow text on foundation design with some information of soil mechanics. It has tons of information of theoretical and practical aspects with a focus on the practical aspects, such as laboratory testing and construction methods. Whether you're a student or a professional, I think this book will have something useful for you. It is extremely informative with great example problems, text that thoroughly explains the concepts without being too wordy, and it covers a very broad range of topics within the realm of basic foundation design. If you're looking for a good geotechnical/foundation design resource, you shouldn't look further than this book.
