Book Description

1590595580 978-1590595589 January 3, 2007 1st 2007. Corr. printing

Wireless developers seek an integrated platform that allows them to create commercial content for cell-phones, PDAs, and any other mobile device extant. Since the technology has evolved with Flash and its low-power-device-optimized cousin, FlashLite, you can create applications, games, and animation. Development times are slashed with Flash. The reward is a rapid and flexible workflow. Flash provides scalable vector graphics for any size screen size. Flash incorporates a variety of media formats, such as MP3, MIDI, JPG, and PNG. Flash is the perfect choice for wireless development given that device abilities can vary substantially.

This book is for anyone wishing to learn how to implement Flash applications on mobile devices, including Flash and J2ME. It discusses the pluses and minuses of this platform. But its focus is to show how Flash surpasses J2ME for a superior rich user experience.

About the Author

Richard Leggett is a freelance flash developer in the United Kingdom, coming from a Computer Science background working mainly with C++. He discovered the exciting new technology that was Flash 3 way back in 2000. Since then he has spent his waking hours digging into the core of Flash, uncovering how it works and how it can work for us.

Richard is also a super moderator at the FlashMove.com forums and regularly enforces Flash law upon unsuspecting board members, issuing commands such as "stand back and leave the scenes alone". He runs a blog at www.richardleggett.co.uk where many Flash and tech related postings, bugs, tips and tricks can be found. He’s a great believer in sharing information for the benefit of those wanting to learn and thinks the Flash community is one of the best at doing this. One of his main pleasures is satisfying the urge to find out just what is possible with Flash. Now, with FlashLite, whole new worlds of possibilities are open to Flash developers in the most widespread platform in existence - mobile devices.

4.0 out of 5 stars Want to publish flash apps to mobile phones?, May 14, 2007
By
This review is from: Foundation Flash Applications for Mobile Devices (Hardcover)
This book will take a flash developer a long way towards publishing applications on mobile phones. I didn't see anything on utilizing web services (something that is easy to do with flash lite 2.x) nor how to create .cab files (which was why I actually bought the book), but it covers just about everything else to a good level of working depth.

I wouldn't suggest this book to someone without any flash actionscript experience (or at least some object oriented programming experience) but you don't have to be a comp. sci. major either. Well written and not too witty (some programmer books can read like geek joke books) this book approaches the flash mobile development process from a practical hands on stance which works well with those who like to get their hands dirty while learning.

Strongly recommended reading for next gen phone app development in flash.

This review is from: Foundation Flash Applications for Mobile Devices (Hardcover)
I'm sure this was a very good book when it first came out. I'm also sure that it's horribly outdated now. The world has moved beyond ActionScript 2 and Flash Lite 2. While this book could give you a decent foundation, you'll still have to catch up to current practice. Much better to buy a more recent book.
