4.0 out of 5 stars Geto Boys- The Foundation, January 25, 2005
This review is from: Foundation (Audio CD)
The Geto Boys (Bushwick Bill, Scarface, Willie D) return with their latest offering "The Foundation" (2005). At fifteen tracks long (including intro/outro) this is a relatively short release. GB start the album off strong, getting grimy on "Declaration of War". This is followed up by the albums lead single the banging "Yes Yes Y'all" which all three members shining. Another standout has the Geto Boys lighting up "When It Gets Gangsta" with some thugged out lyrics. The Geto Boys take things to another level with the outstanding "I Tried", a sentimental track, which have the trio analyzing life, and the struggles they have gone through. My favorite track at the moment is "G Code", love the beat and lyrics to this cut. More reflection follows on the laidback "Leaning on You" a track which have the Geto Boys opening up, giving praise to god with the end result being another impressive track. More grimy tales follow on cuts like "Nothin' to Show" and "Real N**** S***". "In The End" The Geto Boys recommend the secret of winning is to find a way out of the game. Bushwick Bill does well on solo with "Dirty B****", telling a story of love and betrayal. I can honestly say I am really happy to see the Geto Boys back at it, "The Foundation" is a definite pickup for fans of the group.

4.0 out of 5 stars Real Rap, January 26, 2005

This an excellent album, a relief from the commercialized rap of today. The beats and lyrics are solid and even though Scarface outraps his fellow Geto Boys, they all come together to make the greatest release of this year so far.

I promised myself that I would stop buying gangster themed misogynistic rap music beginning in 2005. However, I couldn't help from picking up the Geto Boys latest offering, if for no other reason than the historical value. After all, it was the combination of Mr. Scarface, Willie D., and Bushwick Bill who would completely shock the music industry with their 1995 self-titled album. I recall reading about them in my hometown months before they gained rotation on local radio stations. The general consensus among critics was that they were the vilest sociopaths to ever make music. However, in between the cursing and violence the three did maintain a rather appealing talent, and they certainly influenced the rap industry for better or worse. Now ten years since they first combined to attack the music scene, they present what may be a farewell album. While the three have certainly matured over the years, they remain thugs at heart with no plans for going down without a shootout. I must admit that my opinion of the Geto Boys is prejudiced by my personal view that Scarface is one of the top five all-time greatest rappers since the inception of commercially distributed hip-hop. He is nothing short of an extraordinary and brilliant story teller. While Bushwick and Willie D. tend to provide rather predictable stories of how tough they are; `Face prefers to take occasion in vividly explaining the reasons for why. His vocal inflections alone make his most thugged-out verses sound soulful. In fairness, Bushwick and Willie D. elevate their story telling skills to keep pace with `Face on the sentimental "I Tried"; the spiritual "Leaning on You; and the braggadocios "1, 2, the 3." Each group member has a solo cut. Bill with his paranoid and psychopathic "Dirty B@!th." Willie D. with "Nothin 2 Show", which is an insightful and brooding view of the struggles in the `hood. `Face with the "G Code", which should be a study tool in our nation's major universities under Street Rules 101. Collectively, the Geto Boys present a well-thought fabulously produced album that can serve as a teaching tool for the new breed of gangster rappers and street hustlers. Ten years ago the Boys were full of rage and urgency. As expressed best in "The Secret", they are now wise and careful. Alas, old gangsters never die, they just find better hideouts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, January 28, 2005
This review is from: Foundation (Audio CD)
This is what hip hop has been missing. Just when you think hip hop is getting too water downed bam out of nowhere Geto Boys drop a great album. This is the hottest album in stores right now. Production is just deadly. And this album is gangsta rap at it's very finest. G-Code is the best track on the whole album.

Geto Boys - The Foundation (Rap-a-Lot, 2005)

It's funny that this past winter, everybody rushed to the store to get the new 50 Cent or Game album but passed on this album from the Geto Boys, some of the originators of gangsta rap. I'm not saying that this is their best album but it is refreshing to hear them return and on the right track.

Scarface sounds as nice as ever, especially on his solo, "G-Code", but Bushwick Bill and Wilie D. are showing their age a little. Still, I would rather listen to Bill and Willie than any other fake gangsta. "Highlights include "Leaning on You", the single "Yes Yes, Y'all" and "1, 2, the 3". While the Boys do misstep on the requisite club track, "We Boogie", and Bushwick's solo, "Dirty B***h", ends with a generic reenactment of him beating up his ex-girl, it's great to have the Geto Boys back, at least for one more album. -EJR

5.0 out of 5 stars BUY THIS NOW, March 27, 2005
This review is from: Foundation (Audio CD)
No, I'm not THAT Willie D. In fact, I don't listen to hip-hop much these days and I don't have much nice to about any of the GB's more recent solo or group efforts (and I've bought them all). I don't usually give 5 star reviews. But I can't say enough good things about this album. How about: IT'S BETTER THAN "WE CAN'T BE STOPPED!" It's so good, so self assured that it you wonder who was behind the lesser albums because it couldn't possibly be the same people. No more following trends and doing Tupac imitations here. Everbody is on point here, every track a winner. I really have nothing more to say. Get this.

5.0 out of 5 stars H-Town's finest wrecking shop, February 1, 2005
This review is from: Foundation (Audio CD)
This album is one of the best productions coming from the Geto Boys. I have not stopped jamming since I purchased it. Growing up in H-Town we grew up on the Geto Boys and love all of their music. It's funny how America can make some of the sorriest, no rhyming, elementary school rappers successes and keep them paid, but will not recognize the real and give it props.
On this album I have to give it to Willie D for wrecking them lyrics and giving people the feel of what a REAL H-TOWN HUSTLA is all about. I know some of y'all won't feel him, but he did that. Keep doing what you do Willie D, Scarface, and Bushwick Bill because that is definitely not studio rapping. This album is worth the money and will be a classic in the collection compared to most of these sorry albums today. Continue representing H-Town baby, we proud of y'all!!!!!!!!!!!!

This review is from: Foundation (Audio CD)
damn, the boys r back again and hittin it wit real straight up gangsta trackz.
even the highpushed the game gotta quit the scene for da real underground gangstas of da rap secene.

the beats r real tight, sometimes hard uptempo, just for bangin & ridin.

the lyricz, like always, the realezt what u ever heard, they improved a lot, the trio is the most underrated rapgroup ever step the scene.

u like dem gansta rap ?
u like: G-Unit, scarface, westside connection, the game ?

4.0 out of 5 stars Geto Boys forever!!!, January 27, 2005
This review is from: Foundation (Audio CD)
Best album this year. Better than the overhype "The Game" Cd. These cats always bring the realness and have been doing it for years. Longevity is best to describe them. Would have been a classic but two songs could have been omitted(we boogie, 1,2, and 3" Otherwise everyother song is bangin. My favorites in this order are as follows:
6. When it gets gangsta
5. I tried
4. G Code
3. Leaning on you
2. Wille D's nothing to show
1. Yes Yall
The tracks are filled with great emotion and they actually talk about something, not like these new rappers like , young buck, g-unit. game, etc. They are the real, and are the original gangster rapper or reality rappers. Thanks for another great album from my all time favorite group, Geto Boys.
