Book Description

1903450292 978-1903450291 February 2002 1

Today's designer is called upon to wear multiple hats in the task of creating for various media. The ability to generate graphics from a blank page, in a way that they can be effectively repurposed for both print and web delivery, is crucial.

But where to start? And how? Foundation Illustrator 10 takes an approachable and authoritative look at Adobe's staple vector graphics package, teaching the fundamental skills required to design graphics for web and print.

It looks at the benefits of using vector graphics in design, examining each of the tools in the well-honed Illustrator toolbox. It gives advice on how to organize work and evolve good workflow habits, and how to bring out the best in color artwork.

After this solid grounding, the book breaks out into open waters by trying out more complex effects, taking an in-depth look at paths and the varying way in which objects can be created.

After the creativity, readers are given all the information they need to prepare their work for print or web. The end result will be enough solid knowledge to negotiate the print and electronic design world with ease, while packing a potent punch with some swift Illustrator moves.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to Illustrator!, April 11, 2002
By
This review is from: Foundation Illustrator 10 (Paperback)
I received this book in the morning and by the next evening I was using Illustrator 10 to produce web graphics. There is a minimum of jargon and the examples are to the point, offering new techniques all the time. The informal style makes this guide easy to read. All in all, an extremely satisfactory experience. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worthwhile, August 5, 2002

"gerri_waite" (Huntingdon Beach, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Foundation Illustrator 10 (Paperback)
I bought Foundation Illustrator on the basis of two recommendations - one was after reading a review in a Mac magazine, which said that this book was one of the best available; and the second was that I had recently bought and worked through the excellent Photoshop Upgrade Essentials by the same authors. I was not disappointed. The explanations and instructions are very clear; and the real world information and examples were very useful.

I particularly found the chapter on drawing paths of value - I finally understand how the Bezier pen works, and I've already had much success transferring these skills not only to my Illustrator graphics, but I've also been able to draw on this knowledge when working with paths and vector shapes in Adobe Photoshop.

If you've ever had difficulty understanding how transparency works in Illustrator, you'll also find that chapter very constructive. The way in which transparency reacts differently depending on groupings and layers is complex, but this has been explained very clearly as well.

There is also very good coverage of all the web features within Illustrator, something that some books tend to overlook; as well as thorough coverage of the new features like the Symbolism tools.

All in all, I'm very happy with my purchase - the content and the style make it very worthwhile. I only have two minor niggles - the lack of color and CD. Some of the illustrations lose impact when printed in black and white, and a color signature would have made the book more impressive. Also the files towards the end of the book are fairly complex and large, and downloading them from the website is a little irritating. But then there are also bonus chapters on the companion website which I might not have found if I'd not had to download the source files.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not for the Graphically Oriented, July 7, 2002

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Foundation Illustrator 10 (Paperback)
I bought the book based on the one review which gave it raving reviews. Unfortunately if you are graphically oriented like most designers, then this is not for you. If you like to read how to do stuff, then I guess it's fine. Also be advised the few graphics in the book are all MS Windows palettes which may irk Macintosh users.
