I have to say this book is excellent. I have bought a few books to upskill me on statistics and research methods but this book is the best book (of any type) I have read in a long time. It explains everything really well. I am doing a PhD is genetics and so require heaps of stats etc and it's great. Would recommend to anyone wanting a good research reference for statistics and clinical research methods.

We had looked at previous versions and were glad to see that it had been updated. It has been an excellent source for the medical students, residents, fellows and some research nurses at our facility. We have been having a series of seminars on how to get research projects started.

This text has tons of information and is great to read before lecture because it is more thorough and has lots of examples. It is lengthy and a slow read, but worth the time.

I had the previous edition of this book during my Master's program and recently purchased this edition for my doctoral training. There is alot more information covered in this book and although it takes me more than one attempt to understand some of the concepts, the material can be understood. This book will be very helpful to have during the rest of my program I'm sure.

This is one of the few books that really goes into the foundations of clinical research. I use it very regularly as a basic reference for my undergrad statistics class. The book starts with the basis of research which is logic and thinking. I have seen very few research books that start with this type of an introduction to research and just that in my opinion makes it a great book to start, especially if somebody is being introduced to the subject for the first time.

When I began my study of graduate statistics, I needed a good introduction in layman's language to the forthcoming forced feeding of math equations, Greek letters, and obscure references. Derek Rowntree's STATISTICS WITHOUT TEARS (which I favorably reviewed here on Amazon) gave it to me. Like a good hors d'oeuvre, STATISTICS whetted my appetite.

Now that I have completed graduate statistics, having sliced and gnawed and chewed my way through several heavy servings of very filling entrees from alphas to ANCOVA, I needed a good aperitif to help me digest it all. I needed something to organize what I learned into a logical sequence, to provide me a first go-to reference to refresh my understanding and help me remember what I learned, and why. That book is FOUNDATIONS OF CLINICAL RESEARCH: APPLICATIONS TO PRACTICE (3RD EDITION), by Leslie G. Portney and Mary P. Watkins. I should have known that it would take two ladies to lay it all out so nicely. FOUNDATIONS is to statistics what Emily Post is to etiquette, a thorough and useful reference.

The book begins with theories and concepts, which a deductive learner like me appreciates. It begins right at the top level with the concepts of clinical research. It proceeds to the idea of measurement. It then bores down into the details of clinical research design in all its many types. Only after fully explicating the general material do Portney and Watkins burrow into the mathematical elements of statistical analysis, including t-tests, analysis of variance, multiple comparison tests, correlation, regression, measures of association (chi square), statistical measures of reliability and validity, risk measurement, and ultimately the challenging techniques of multivariate analysis.

Although I have several clinical research books, this one is easy to navigate and understand. It is just what I need as I begin my dissertation research.

My wife has her Masters Degree in Public Health and is a physician, so she knows something about research methodology and statistics, and she feels it is quite good! I like the examples and the layout, font and visual presentation of the book itself is attractive and doesn't drain me. Very impressed!
