Editorial Reviews

Review

"The Visual Glossary is terrific, it speaks directly to the students' need for accessible, concise information, in a graphically intelligent, eye-catching format. Running glossary is great."

"[The]strength of this text is the ease of the language as it combines terms and concepts of an academic, art historical nature with the ease of a storyteller. The author is insightful and has the ability to "unwind" complex strings of information into the fundamental threads that lie at its core. No easy task."

"The introduction to every chapter is fantastic because it presents the conceptual and/or contextual use of the design element in a more colloquial fashion. Not only is this necessary to fully understand the studio use of the word, it makes for great examples of how we manipulate the meaning of words. I would hope that the students will then question, "Now, how can I manipulate this element to mean what I want it to?"

"Chapter 5 on color- absolutely surpasses the work of any other author. The beginning is great, "Color does matter." And yes, "Perception of color is rooted as much in science as it is in aesthetics. Perception of color belongs to the realm of the physicist as much as to the artist and philosopher." And the author backs these statements up."

What a wonderful book. It was a college textbook and it has a wide assortment of information regarding the arts. One of the best books I've found on the subject. The price for the book was very low. Great seller.

Book Review For Foundations Of Art And Design 1st Edition (printed in color):
I will describe this book as a "meat and potatoes" type of book. The elements and principles of design are described to a tee. Every art word you can think of is defined in this book. The Proportion section discusses the Golden Mean, Golden Rectangle, The Spiral, Fibonacci Numbers, Root Five Rectangle. The extra information included in this book is the Visual Glossaries, which explains two/three/four dimensional mediums and 31 styles of art from A to S (abstract to surrealsim). If you are looking for a book that reads "light and airy", then I recommend buying Design Basics by David Lauer and Stephen Pentak (read my review for the 7th edition). Here is the Table Of Contents for Foundations Of Art And Design:

Chapter 1 The Creative Impulse
Chapter 2 Line
Chapter 3 Shape
Chapter 4 Value
Chapter 5 Color
Chapter 6 Texture
Chapter 7 Space
Chapter 8 Time And Motion
Chapter 9 Unity And Variety
Chapter 10 Emphasis And Focal Point
Chapter 11 Balance And Rhythm
Chapter 12 Scale And Proportion
Visual Glossary - Mediums
Visual Glossary - Style
