Book Description

The helicopter is a sophisticated aircraft and is therefore demanding on its designers. This unique introductory text charts a journey through the theory, design, construction and operation of helicopters. The difficulties that can arise when the aircraft is considered as a whole are highlighted using many practical examples and case studies. The author examines these problems for situations in which the helicopter is operating on the ground or in flight. The book provides in-depth support for any first course in helicopter engineering. It introduces the principles of rotary wing flight and develops the fundamental equations describing the performance and dynamic behaviour. Essential theories are developed and applied to show how the capabilities and behaviour of a helicopter are influenced by the manner in which rotor characteristics interact with those of the airframe. The author’s broad experience as a design engineer and lecturer combine to produce a book for students, graduates and professionals that conveys not only the essential information but also a real enthusiasm for the subject. Editorial Reviews

Review

"I consider that is it one of the best and most useful books available for the purpose of instructing undergraduate students or engineers about helicopters, their flight mechanics and design. It is a very readable book considering that the subject matter is scientific and basically quite complicated, and it covers areas that are not to be found in other helicopter texts."

From the Publisher

Using practical examples and illustrated case studies, supported by all relevant theory, this text offers an accessible introduction which guides the reader through the theory, design, construction and operation of helicopters. Develops fundamental performance and control equations in order to explore the rotor aerodynamic and dynamic characteristics of helicopters. Example calculations and performance predictions, reflecting current practice, demonstrate how to assess a design's feasibility. Includes numerous photos.

5.0 out of 5 stars A rewarding book, December 31, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
After I tried to study foundations of helicopter flight on my own with some other books I took to this one and got fascinated about helicopter theory.

The chapters are:
Introduction
Rotorcraft configuration
The rotor in hover
The rotor in axial flight - climb and decent
The rotor in forward flight
Dynamics of the rotor
Autorotative performance
Blade dynamics
Helicopter trim
Vibration and it's transmission
Tail rotors
Ground resonance
Rotor speed governing
Methods of calculating helicopter power, fuel consumption andmission performance
Epilogue - windmill

The book is a very rewarding pleasure to read!
The topics are motivating, text and derivations are clear and well balanced. You can study the book without ever getting stuck when you have a good background in aeronautical engineering.

I would wish the Author writes another book about helicopter flight dynamics and control as well.
