Loneliness survives over 100 years,
By A Customer
This review is from: Foundling (Hardcover)
FOUNDLING, written by the 19th century French novelist Hector Malot, has been one of the favorites of European children (about 8-13year)over more than a century. FOUNDLING tells the story of Remi in search for family. As a baby Remi, dressed in silk clothes, has been found by the worker Barbarin. At the age of eight, he roughly is separated from his foster mother, and the book tells his adventures while roaming through France and Engeland. The book gives an excellent picture of different social classes in 19th century Europe, the misfortunates of the poor, and the way the legal system works for the rich. Above all, the book gives a beautiful picture of absolut loneliness. But it also shows the value of friendship. As children very easily identify themselves with Remi, the book offers an excellent opportunity to talk about their own feelings. The book has been the base for several movies and tv-series.
