3.0 out of 5 stars Not quite Eerie, January 12, 2006
Being a big fan of the Eerie Indiana TV show I naturally wanted to read the books, even though I'm an adult. This book was the second of the Eerie books I have read. The first one, Attack of the Two-Ton Tomatoes by Mike Ford, was really good. Although written simply (as you'd expect from a kids' book) it had lots of small details in it that made it feel exactly like an episode of the show, and made me laugh numerous time throughout.

The copy I have of Fountain of Weird says it is also by Mike Ford on the cover, but inside it says Sherry Shahan! So while reading it I wasn't sure who had actually written it. I knew Mike Ford was a good Eerie writer, but this is obviously not by him. The story isn't bad, but there are details in it just don't make sense. The epilogue especially mentions things but doesn't explain them at all.

It's not a bad book, but it just doesn't feel quite like an episode of Eerie, and there's none of the Eerie humour of that Mike Ford managed to capture. Having said that, when I bought the books this was what I expected, but was very pleasantly surprised by the Mike Ford title. If this had been the first one I had read I doubt I would have bought any more. Try Attack of the Two-Ton Tomatoes if you want a more faithful-to-the-series book.
