5.0 out of 5 stars The Way Warriors Were, June 4, 2008
By
Junie "Junie" (New Mexico, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Four Albums of Military Song from Oscar Brand (Audio CD)
This collectors edition re-release of Oscar Brand's four classic records of American military songs recorded back in the Fifties and early Sixties is more than worth its price. Covering the Air Force, Army, Navy and Marine Corps, Brand has chosen what he considered to be representative informal songs actually written and sung by the guys who did the fighting.

The lyrics are raunchy (well, not by today's standards) and have been lightly cleaned up in places. They are humorous--the kind of humor you would expect from civilians in uniform doing a nasty job with real risks involved. The music bed is universally derived from old tunes which every grunt, zoomie, swab-jock and gyrene would have known from childhood.

For anyone who wants to catch something of the spirit of the guys who fought our wars--World Wars I and II, the Korean War, this two CD set will do the job. I hope that someone, some day does the same for the Vietnam War and our current wars. Of course, now the women get to have some music too,

5.0 out of 5 stars Oscar Brand Gets It Right!, September 20, 2007

There are some funny songs in this collection. I am partial to "Every Inch A Sailor" since I first heard that album when the crew of my ship played "Quantanamo Bay" over the ships intercom as we were steaming out of the harbor after an 8 week stay at Gitmo. You favorites may be based on what branch off the service you served in.

Brought back a lot of memories for me!

3.0 out of 5 stars Amusing songs, December 10, 2006

The songs on this CD are quite amusing! The only Oscar Brand recording I had ever heard before I heard this CD, was his "Sports Car Songs" album, which was given to me by a relative when I was just a kid. One bit of information lacking on this CD that I would have appreciated are the release dates of each of the 4 albums that are on it.
