3.0 out of 5 stars NOTE TO SELF: DUMP BRIT April 10, 2011
Format:DVD
The opening credits scream "major indie film." Trevor and Rob sell privacy fences. As a hobby they buy estates and sell the junk on E-Bay. They recently moved into a home owned by Bill Zill who had passed away. The man didn't leave much behind, but left stuff that was coded and cryptic. Rob invites his fiancee to come stay with them, an irritating girl named Amber/Brit who was once engaged to Trevor (guess how that works out). Amber talks like people type on the Internet, with phrases like, BFD and BRB. Likewise her and Trevor like to have conversations with their mouth full of food, another bit of annoying indie realism.

It turns out Bill Zill had a love for a web site called "4 Boxes." The 4 boxes are 4 rooms in a house which has cameras. A girl used to run the site, but then left. The house was taken over by a guy who wears a gas mask and is apparently a terrorist making bombs to send to the US. Trevor is trying to figure out who they are, where they are, and if it is real.

The movie ends with a twist, then another twist, and then one stupid ending. I think they should have let the movie go with just the first twist instead of attempting to get cute. Sex, brief nudity, f-bomb. If you really really love low budget indies, then try this one out.

5.0 out of 5 stars A LITTLE GEM OF A LOW-BUDGET FLICK December 9, 2012
By gargar
Format:DVD
"Four Boxes" is a little gem of a low-budget movie that I thoroughly enjoyed! Rob, Amber and Trevor, the main characters in the story, are 3 ne'er-do-wells always chasing the ever elusive "American Dream" - deeply flawed characters who believe that money and celebrity are the automatic keys to happiness, excitement and success. This movie is about as timely of a commentary on the digital degeneration of American society as I've seen. Top-notch performances from the cast - the sex scenes are a laugh riot - and the three "cyberdramatists" of the plot, who badly need personality transplants rather than "celebrity", get what they deserve in the end!!! This gem is for the off-broadway crowd rather than the action movie thrill seekers out there. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Burns With a Slow Fuse - But Finally Delivers December 10, 2010
Format:DVD
Four Boxes is one of the more interesting low-budget psychological horror flicks that I've seen in a while. While most of the reviews I've read online for the film are negative, I'm not afraid to say that I enjoyed it.

The film tells the story of three friends who sell the belongings of recently deceased people on eBay. While working in the home of someone who died, they begin to notice mysterious things about his belongings. They also become hooked on a website that displays streaming video of a bizarre apartment, and it's unusual occupants who seem unaware that they are being filmed.

What I like most about this film is that the ending is totally unpredictable. There are intentional clues that may give you some idea of one major plot twist, but not the full scope. I enjoyed that there were two elements of the film to grab and hold your attention. One is the mystery left behind by the home's previous owner, the other is trying to understand what the bizarre webcam people are doing. I also love the quirky theme song for the film.

Any downsides to this movie? The budget was only $40,000 (compared to $1.2 million for "Saw"), so of course it's not going to be flawless. My biggest complaint is that most of the film drags along slowly. While the ending was worth it, I was tempted to fast forward past some of the early dialogue scenes.

The acting and dialogue could have been better, I thought the overuse of slang was a little annoying. But considering a 2010 Mercedes Benz costs more than what this film did to make, I'm cutting it a lot of slack.

The fuse burned a little too slow for me throughout most of the film, but I did find myself waiting to discover the secrets of both the house and the streaming website. I think it paid off in the end. I'm glad I gave this one a rent. Ignore the good and bad reviews both, give it a rent, and form your own opinion.
