About the Author

STUDS TERKEL (1912-2008) was a free spirit, an outspoken populist, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, a terrible ham, and one of the best-loved characters on the American scene. Born in New York in 1912, he lived in Chicago for over eight decades.

From AudioFile

Author and radio interviewer Studs Terkel presents excerpts from his Chicago radio program which aired from 1955 to 1989. Presented mostly in chronological order, these forty interviews provide an oral history of the last four decades. Terkel is the consummate interviewer with his gravely voice and insightful and probing questions. He provides introductions for each of the decades, and musical excerpts separate many of the interviews. To hear Pete Seeger sing in 1955, a young Toni Morrison read from her second novel in 1974, or composer John Cage discuss his work in 1982, along with the words of the 37 other actors, philosophers, artists, musicians and authors, is truly an extraordinary listening experience. A.A.B. An AUDIOFILE Earphones Award winner (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

5.0 out of 5 stars Four Decades with Studs Terkel, January 3, 2002

This review is from: Four Decades with Studs Terkel: A Compilation of Extraordinary Interviews from 40 Years of Broadcasting (Audio Cassette)
I have just purchased my third copy of this tape. I lend it out and it never comes back. It is a wonderful collection of oral interviews covering a wide range of topics and personalities. The interviews are 1st person history; the attitudes and issues of each decade are reflected in the comments. Studs is a knowledgeable interviewer. If you have any interest in 20th century America, I highly recommend it -- get it now, it is getting harder to find.
