Get Essays Moral, Political, and Literary INSTEAD,

The Four Dissertations etc is a great collection but quite pricy considering what you are getting. The two posthumous (post-hume-ous?) :) essays are already usually found in many other publications (some versions of Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion contain them etc). Actually, four of the six major works that comprise this book are found in the excellent 680 page: "Essays Moral Political and Literary" published by Liberty Classics/Liberty Fund and found on Amazon for twelve bucks. That book contains 49 essays in total!!
The two major works found only in this "Four Dissertations" book but not in Essays Moral, Political, and Literary are: "The Natural History of Religion" and "Of the Passions" The Rousseau stuff and Hume introduction are also unique to this book. Bottom line: If you want to hit nearly ever Hume essay in one fell swoop with lots of bang for the buck, go with Essays Moral, Political, & Literary. If you need Rousseau's suicide writings and Hume's essays on Natural History of Religion & The Passions get this book!! |
