Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The son of an Italian immigrant loses his father and seeks work in the employ of a Depression-era gangster doing the same work as his old man (and here comes the hook): hunting dragons. As with his superb I Kill Giants (2009), Kelly creates a fantasy adventure grounded with deep emotional stakes. Fantasy elements are used as a most effective backdrop for the inner life of 10-year-old Enrico, whose masterfully crafted perspective reveals a dawning realization that the world is much darker and more deceptive than he could have imagined, even as his deep longing for a missing father gives him the tenacity to honor the man’s beloved memory. Fiumara combines Sam Kieth’s tactile figures with Ben Templesmith’s stylized collision of bright and dark to create a world of sweat and grime as wholly convincing for the dragon caves as for the realism of 1934 New York City. The one drawback: this book serves as a mere prologue for what promises to be a top-notch epic. Grades 9-12. --Jesse Karp

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT GRAPHIC NOVEL!!! October 18, 2010
a well-written and engagingly illustrated graphic novel all librarians and teachers of middle school and high school students should consider. the story hooked me from page one, and called upon me to critically reflect on not only what was going on for the characters in the story, but also what goes on in the "real-world." joe kelly is a comic-graphic-novel genius who has mastered how to tell story with both words and images. his words and images gently guide the reader through the story, ultimately teaching the reader how to balance being both print-text literate and image literate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Story and Strong Atmosphere. August 1, 2010
Joe Kelly grabs readers once again with his creative talent. Combining the lore of dragons and the sad history of the depression makes this new series something to take an interest in.

Enrico is a young boy who has to grow up quickly so that he can take care of his family when times are tough in New York City. Dragons have recently begun breeding again but are content living outside the city in secluded caves, not causing a threat to the people. But man has always been greedy and when they are desperate they turn to an underground ring of dragon fighting. Will Enrico take over the life of his father, or stand up for his new companion's race?

I read quickly through this four issue trade and can't wait for Joe Kelly to start focusing more on his creator-owned licenses. (He has been pretty involved on Amazing Spider-man, but he should have significantly less involvement after Dan Slott takes over exclusively this Fall.) He also always has great artists to join him on his books and Four Eyes is no exception.

A must buy for Joe Kelly fans and buyers who just want a great story without having to worry about continuity or tie-ins with other books. At $9.99, you're not gonna find a better deal. Be sure to check out his other books such as I Kill Giants as well as Image's other series.
