PreSchool-- Wood's large, clear watercolor-and-pen illustrations of the kittens' farm adventure will capture the interest of toddlers. Dunbar's text is appealing because of the animals' sounds and the repetition of phrases that encourage participation. In an elaboration on the model set forth in Flack's Angus and the Ducks (1930), four kittens brave the world. Each tries to scare a farm animal with the sound of a jungle animal, but comes up with only an ineffective ``miaow''; in the end, they're all chased by geese--but then, hissing and spitting, manage to frighten a pup. Several animal voices are neatly worked into the nicely shaped story, affording young listeners a chance to join in; in the simple pen and watercolor illustrations, the animals are lively and genuinely cute, without sentimentality. I have 3 little 5 year olds to read to at night. Their teacher had a copy of this book and everyday the girls would bring this home from the teachers library book share. The pictures and the story are adorable. I like the fact that as the girls are learning to read they can read this themselves. Young ones can listen and the older ones can start to tell the story and fill in the missing words.
