A fresh approach, April 8, 2006
This review is from: The Four Gospels: Newly Translated from the Greek; A Penguin Classic (Hardcover)
E.V. Rieu's translation is fresh and original. Although subsequently overshadowed by such translations as Peterson's The Message, NRSV and the New Jerusalem Bible, etc., for preaching and teaching I still turn to this translation for illumination and a different perspective. For serious biblical scholars, for pastors and for lay leaders, its biblically sound and carefully researched, well worth having in your library.

A Fountain of Living Water, July 22, 2011
This review is from: The Four Gospels: Newly Translated from the Greek; A Penguin Classic (Hardcover)
I agree with another reviewer that this classic translation should be republished. EV Rieu wears his Anglican and classical learning lightly, but the result of his translation and short introduction is a pellucid text that allows the reader to focus on the thoughts rather than the style. I have read this book over and over with delight and always seem to learn something new, with new words catching my attention and revealing oceans of meaning.
The King James and Revised Bibles generally have two columns, each sentence numbered and use old-fashioned English modeled on Greek syntax. The New English Bible is more readable, but makes it difficult to relate citations of Old Testament passages to the New Testament. They both have their merits, but it is this version that I find myself turning to for insights into the human heart.
The second-hand edition I have has lasted well and I have had my money's worth from it many times over and then some. It is only a shame that the author never completed a companion book of the New Testament Letters.

The "other" Rieu, June 11, 2009
This review is from: The Four Gospels: Newly Translated from the Greek; A Penguin Classic (Hardcover)
This is the most poetic modern translation of the Gospels since the King James versions....I don't know why Penguin doesn't re-print this rare collection!
The great ancient Greek translator E.V. Rieu has become so synonomous with Homer that his other translations are often overlooked. I find his Gospels a overwhelming success! The poetics and the fidelity of the original stories is astonishing.
The Gospels were written in prose and this is exactly when Rieu gives us, fresh and inspirational narrative prose poetry. Almost novel-like, similar to his Homer. Beautiful stuff.
- It is of the utmost usefulness to compare different translations of various scriptures, because we are all aware that many ommisions, corrections and mistranslations have been made ever since the original Hebrew and Greek was translated into English. We will never know the full extent of the truth when it comes to this matter, but for now I prefer to read Rieu's versions of these symbolic stories, rather than the King James or anyone elses for that matter.
This particular edition that I'm reviewing is a hardcover version but there are many prints of the original softcover penguin classic on amazon. There is a picture of one of the softcover cover's a couple pages in the search.
