Book Description

Presenting a distinct historical perspective, these intriguing stories chronicle the history and culture of a people we call the Cheyenne (the Tse Tse Stus)-from creation accounts and the introduction of horses to the present. The stories are told as seen through the eyes of Old Nam Shim (which means grandfather) and a little girl named Shadow. Written to present the true story of the Tse Tse Stus, these accounts are accompanied by discussion questions, extension activities, a vocabulary list, and a glossary of Cheyenne terms. They are ideal as a reading supplement for anyone studying Western history, Cheyenne Indian wars, or the anthropology of the Cheyenne people, this book is a valuable resource for multicultural units.

This review is from: Four Great Rivers to Cross: Cheyenne History, Culture, and Traditions (Paperback)
The stories told within this book fit into an overarching narrative of an old grandfather passing the stories down to his great-grandchild, and that aspect of the story is very grounding and real. There is a sweetness and reverence in the relationship between the storyteller and his descendant in giving the gift of these stories as his final act in life.

Having studied folklore as a college student, I found more in the stories than the casual reader might, things that the "classroom ideas" sections at the end of each story never approach. I liked the traditional stories, but could have done without the rehash of the Sand Creek Massacre, which gets better treatment in Thom Hatch's "Black Kettle."
