Editorial Reviews

In this sexy, French romantic drama (previously titled HAPPY FEW), two couples decide to explore the boundaries of their relationships by swapping partners. What starts as a fun, free-spirited ménage-a-4 experimentation full of sleepovers, shared vacations, and dinner parties soon turns into a hotbed of desire, anger, and confusion. As their arrangement leads them down an increasingly surprising and provocative path, the lovers begin to question their personal choices and lifestyles, leading to consequences none of them could foresee.

5.0 out of 5 stars Much, much more than sex May 22, 2012
By Dave
Format:DVD
This movie is sexy, there's no doubt about it. If you've seen the trailer, you know what the film is about, and there is no question that it lives up to what the trailer portrays: there is definitely some nudity and there is definitely some promiscuity. And while I (nor the "average" viewer, I'd assume) may not coincide with some of these characters' decisions, it really doesn't take long before the characters get drawn into situations that truly and deeply resonate with the Average Joe. The actors--and I'd say Nicolas Duvauchelle in particular--do a fantastic job of pulling themselves through the full gambit of human emotion. The drama between these characters throughout the entire film is tangible, and the audience can really witness the full transformation of these characters; from free-loving and seemingly careless individuals who are simply looking for a good time, to real people who find it nearly impossible to continue the lifestyle that they've constructed for themselves.

Ultimately, I'd say this: sex is in this movie, but much like the way of Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut", sex is *not* what the movie is about. Rather, it is simply a tool that allows the actors and director to deliver a true message about what it means to be human, about what it means to grow and mature, and about the reality of what happens when someone blindly follows their desires without giving thought to the consequences.

4.0 out of 5 stars If three's a crowd, then what is four? February 21, 2013

4 Lovers is the sort of film that can't be made in the U.S.: a serious film, with mainstream actors, about very adult topics. There is nothing terribly deep about it, as it basically attempts to show how two married couples, with kids in tow, might go about exchanging partners for an extended period of time. No doubt this occurs in the U.S. and elsewhere, but only in France could they make a quality film about it that never degenerates into pure lascivious, gratuitous cinema.

As one would expect, the multi-party relationships are not without their challenges. Because the couples are exploring uncharted territory without the benefits of religious or social mores, the rules and boundaries are uncertain. At times this results in conflicting views over what it allowed and what is not, which might appear to the viewer to be arguments over trivialities. Yet I think this might be how it is in reality for these couples, as they are truly venturing into the unknown without the benefit of a map. So much of adult (let alone child) behavior is scripted by those who have gone before us. These couples engender the sympathies of the viewers for their mostly successful explorations into polyamorous behavior. As long as there is truth and trust, the film seems to be teaching, it is possible to break free of society's strictures.

The four lead actors turn in strong performances, especially the two female leads, who demonstrate a uniquely French lack of inhibition. Elodie Bouchez is absolutely adorable as Teri; she has a unique, model-quality look, which becomes intoxicating when she breaks into English to teach some words to the others. I am not sure, however, if including the children in the film added anything to it. Yes it makes the point that these two couples are also parents, but there is not enough time to fully explore the impact of the parents' behavior on the children.

I recommend 4 Lovers for viewers who appreciate adult French cinema.
