Four Miles to Pinecone,
By
This review is from: Four Miles to Pinecone (Fawcett Juniper) (Mass Market Paperback)
Minnesota author John Hassler uses Four Miles to Pinecone as an allegory to itself. He opens by stating summer is over then proceeds to tell a tale of growing up and making decisions of one particular summer. In the end, the book becomes its own forty-seven page assignment (and then some) as described in the early chapters. Hassler weaves an intricate tale using metaphors along the way. Particularly poignant is the main characters inability to use a manual transmission on a car. Hassler writes how he often gets stuck in one gear due to unfamiliarity with a clutch. This is a metaphor for his character's inablity to change gears in his life. He insists on working in a grocery store, and plans to do so forever (so it seems), or how he cannot turn in his friend whose become a burglar. The is a very well-thought and developed story line. It is an older work by an accomplished author, but is worth reading nonetheless. It is a middle school level book, and should be part of many schools' required reading lists.

This review is from: Four Miles to Pinecone (Fawcett Juniper) (Mass Market Paperback)
Being a teenage boy growing up in Minnesota, I took an extra personal interest in the story. I could relate to the scenes that he was writing about and as I got deeper and deeper into the plot, it felt like I was actually in the story. Hassler's events were short and to the point. He covered a lot of detail in only one hundred fifteen pages. I prefer books that have a straightforward plot and one that has good principles. I feel that 4 Miles to Pinecone is a book that has all of that.

This is an interesting story by an excellent author. It makes a point about decisions everyone must make to do the right thing or take the easy way out. Part of the story is set in town in the world of a teenager--school, part-time job, friends, etc. Part of the story is set in a rural area of wildlife and cabins. Anyone of any age should enjoy this fast-reading story. All of Mr.Hassler's books are top-notch; this one for young people is also. It makes a good point without being preachy.

I think that this book was very good, but as previously suggested, perhaps not for 7th graders. The way the charecters were described really made you relate to them. I like the format and style of Jon Hassler, and hope he continues to write for young adults.

This review is from: Four Miles to Pinecone (Fawcett Juniper) (Mass Market Paperback)
The book was about a teenage boy who that any teenager can relate to. I can relate to this story because I live in rural Minnesota and know what Hassler is writing about and any one else I would think could just jump right in and feel comfortable because he did so well and making and describing the scenes. I also feel the author did a good job in telling this story with out making the story sound like a lesson I just picked it up along the reading. I also liked that this was an easy to read story it made it so I wanted more to read, so I went to other books by Hassler. Pesonally, I enjoy reading books that go by quickly and are not 700 pages long. I enjoy reading Jon Hassler and intend to read more of his books.

I kind of liked the book, but some parts of the book wereboring. I think Tom Barry should have told the police on Mouse. Iwouldn't care if it was my friend who did a crime. I didn't want to read the book during English class.

I hated Four Miles to Pinecone,

This review is from: Four Miles to Pinecone (Fawcett Juniper) (Mass Market Paperback)
Four Miles to Pinecone was the worst book I have ever read. It was short and boring. The characters where dull, the plot was bad and the writing was awful. There was no adventure. All it was was about a kid's trip to some lake in the middle of nowhere. I don't care about that. It was truly awful.
