Along the way, Adams battles ex-pugs, thugs, Louisiana gangsters, Mexican drug lords, Ozark hillbillies, and a variety of colorful and tough boxers.
Adams is recruited and trained by the garrulous old Kelly Shaw, an ex-boxer himself who steers Mark through the pitfalls of not only the boxing world, but through the problems faced by a young man growing up in today’s society. Shaw’s family adopts Mark, and together they form a bond too strong too break.
After years of struggle, Adams seems on the verge of obtaining his dream—heavyweight champion of the world—when a gangster from Kelly Shaw’s past emerges to try and derail Mark’s quest. The exciting conclusion proves to be a matter of extremes—total defeat for one and overwhelming success for the other!
