Words Aren't Fair

By Martha J. Biery

"Four Square: The Total Writing Classroom for Grades 1-4" is one of my favorite books about the writing process. I teach reading and writing and it has been a long recognized fact that writing often develops later than reading. Experts suggest that this is because writing is a multi-tasking skill. Motor memory for letters, spelling, syntax, sematics, etc., all play a part in the writing process. "Four Square" provides a structure for this process, giving the students the scaffolding they need in which they can put their ideas.
Using the techniques in this book allows the students to focus on the content and the subskills but not all at once. With this process, students learn to make their own structure, and this then allows them to explore language and hone their ideas into an understandable piece of writing. I highly recommend this book.
