3.0 out of 5 stars A little disappointing September 13, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Like most people who fell in love with the Divergent series, I was super excited for the first installment in her new short story series.

But, unfortunately, I was disappointed. Don't get me wrong, Four is an awesome guy but he wasn't the strong guy I was used to in Divergent and Insurgent. Yeah I know he probably grew into a stronger guy but still! And I was also disappointed to not find out more about Marcus and his mom. I was kinda looking forward to that. And you know what also sucked? It was like, less than thirty pages :/

What I was most disappointed about was not really learning anything new. It was basically just a more in depth look at what we already knew and it was from a different POV. I already knew Marcus whipped him with a belt. I already knew he had a cool waterfall sculpture thing and I already knew what happened to Four's mom. The only cool thing was the part when he met a factionless.

So all in all I would suggest you read it but don't expect to have your socks knocked off. 3/5 stars. If I knew all this I'd still buy it;)

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay, so I didn't love it, but... September 17, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Okay, so I didn't love it. The Transfer, a short story by Veronica Roth, promised to be a look inside Four's head. We'd find out more of his back story, relationships, and more facets to his personality. It delivered what it promised, but without that little something more I was expecting. I was expecting to see the softer side of him, the random glimpses of kindness that we saw through Tris's eyes.

We already knew most of what was in The Transfer. There were no stunning revelations. I assumed, and perhaps wrongly so, that during his two years in Dauntless, he became harder in the same way that Tris did. Because Four received Abnegation in his aptitude test, I figured he was more Abnegation through and through. But I didn't see that side of him. I saw anger, hatred and fear as well as strength and resolve, but 16-year old Four was less sympathetic than I was hoping.

Don't get me wrong, I have plenty of sympathy for a child who is routinely beaten by his father and abandoned by his mother, but the boy who would rather die than let the girl he loves be executed seemed to be missing.

There are three more short stories to be released, so it's entirely possible that he began to show more vulnerability after his initiation. I hope so. One of the things I find so compelling about him is that he is tough as nails, serious, not particularly kind, but he is Abnegation and the glimpses of selflessness that he lets show, like the "thin line of skin above his belt when he lifts his hand to dry his hair," is what makes him real. I hope we get to see some of that in the next three books.

This review will have spoilers from Divergent. Proceed with caution if you have not read Divergent.

It is no secret around here how big of a fan I am of Veronica Roth's Divergent. I've lost track of how many times I have given out copies on this blog, and to friends in general. It's one of those things that you love, and you really want others to read so they can love it as well. Luckily for me, everyone who I have introduced Divergent to has enjoyed it.

The Transfer is a novella about the main character Tris's love interest Four. I am not gonna lie, just typing the name Four makes me smile. A friend of mine pointed out how much my face lights up when I speak about Four. I just absolutely love him. And if he were real, and I were a few years younger Tris would have to watch herself. Four is strong, but he is sensitive and loyal to anyone he chooses to protect. When I found out that there were going to be novellas written about Four, I was so excited. I couldn't wait to get inside of Four's head and see what was ticking!

One of the things I like about novellas is that they are usually optional. While they are fun to read, they usually aren't anything that you have to read to further the story. Usually they are a behind the scenes story, or a way to get to know a lesser character. It's a way for an author and reader to have fun, and get to know a character better. This is definitely the case with The Transfer. Which tells a little bit of the beginning of Four's story. About his life before he was a Dauntless Initiate. I've always wondered what exactly was going through Four's mind when he chose Dauntless over the faction that he born in Abnegation. I wondered how different Tobias was from "Four".

5.0 out of 5 stars Short but worth it September 3, 2013

$1.99 is too expensive for a 30 page book but The Transfer is still worth it, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who reads the Divergent trilogy (can't wait for the third book)

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it! September 3, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really enjoy the style in which Veronica Roth writes in and am so glad that she decided to write these short stories about Tobias (Four). Little things caught my eye, like how Tobias and Tris both had quite the internal struggle while choosing their faction, and both felt the need to change their names prior to committing to their new faction. These little details that Veronica incorporated really brought this emotional and insightful short story together. I can't wait for the next one, and of course, Allegiant!
