5.0 out of 5 stars simply tops
This DVD includes a wonderful song list, a great performance and a solid backup orchestra. The production is also excellent-a sharp picture and clear sound. An added bonus is Levi Stubb's stage patter. Also it has a significant history as it includes the last perfromance of group member Lawerence Payton. This is a must buy if you are a Mowtown fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars WHAT A SHOW!, October 5, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Four Tops - Live at the MGM Grand (DVD)
As a long time Motown fan, I naturally jumped at the chance to capture the Four Tops on DVD. Turns out, this is their last performance with all four original members! And man, what a show! They include all their classic hits, (my favorite, Ain't No Woman Like The One I Got) along with some great covers, including I've Got You Under My Skin and a great Rolling Stones medley. This show really captures the diverse styles that these guys have always been able to pull off. And to top it all off, the picture and sound is superb! It's like having the Four Tops in my living room.

As a long time 4tops fan, who has seen them live several times, I was really looking forward to getting this dvd, and I wasn't disappointed. They give a fabulous, and exciting performance. The sound, and picture are great, and the orchestra is terrific too. If you like the 4tops, don't miss this dvd. We're very lucky to have this live performance available to us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Magic !, March 23, 2001

This review is from: The Four Tops - Live at the MGM Grand (DVD)
The only footage I had seen of the Four Tops was for Motown 25 where they shared the stage and outclassed each other with the legendary Temptations. But this one is absolutely Magic and a must for all Motown Music fans. Once again it shows how timeless the four tops are. They are in a class of their own and on top of the act; great pity Lawrence Payton has moved on to the place beyond. "There will always be the Four tops"

1.0 out of 5 stars Four Tops 40th Anniversary Special, March 10, 2001

If my wife and I had not loaded the player ourselves, we would not have recognized this group as the Four Tops. We assumed after listening to this performance that it wasn't the original group or at least not the original lead vocal. Checking again, we couldn't actually verify if this was the original group or not, however, they are represented as "The Four Tops".

This performance simply does not represent the golden sound of the original group....Extremely disappointing. If you're into this group, buy some of their older releases on CD and save your money on this DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Performance, April 10, 2004

This was the last filmed performance before the musical genius of Lawrence Payton left us forever. This performance showcases The Four Tops normal concert show, with a medley of their bigest hits coming before the encore. I just love the fun Levi has with the audience, and their later hit of "When She Was My Girl" is a lot of fun.

The highlight for me, though, was their performance of "In the Still of the Night" which showcases their four-part harmony that was downplayed by Motown. And Levi's solo of "I've Got You, Under My Skin" is great. I bought 6 copies of this DVD, one for my living room, one for my bedroon, and 4 to give away to friends.

Margie

2.0 out of 5 stars Legendary Motown Group, October 9, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Four Tops - Live at the MGM Grand (DVD)
Well first of all let me say that I am a big Motown fan. In fact, I love classic music period, and I have been collecting music for many years, including video performaces of some of the greatest soul, jazz and classic R&B (not rap crap) artists avaialable. Unfortunately, not many good video performaces are available of these artists, and most are of very poor picture and sound quality because the producers don't make any effort at restoration. They just copy some old VCR footage onto a disc and sell it. In the case of the Four Tops, the picture and sound is relative very good however the concert sadly is not their best performace. Levi Stubbs demostrates extremely poor stage presence in relating to the audience, and although the group does perform many of their best hits, they also waste time performing the songs of other artists, which is not what the audience (or buyers) paid for. When fans go to a concert of their favorite artists or buy a video, they want to here the material of that particular artist for their money. In this case the tops perform songs that are light years from their style of music...I mean, the Rolling Stones???...Come on...how far out can you get?? I actually like some Rolling Stones music..but not by the Four Tops! So, although people who love the Tops will be glad to find any video concert of them with the orignal members...this one is not their best effort by any means. If you are despreate for some Four Tops video, then buy it...you will probably enjoy hearing the orginal members perform, but if you are expecting a great show you will likely be dissppointed.

2.0 out of 5 stars Four Tops Top Fan, September 25, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Four Tops - Live at the MGM Grand (DVD)
I bought this DVD as I am a real Four Tops fan and it was the last recorded DVD before the untimely passing of Laurance Payton-and I wanted to hear Levi Stubbs bring the house down. Unfortunately, even though the old tunes are there, Levi has long ago lost the ability to hit those high peading notes with his rich baritone. In fact, he rarely tried. The other Tops Benson, Fakir and Payton do there best to help but Levi wasn't able to carry the old stuff any longer. Great to see them all but overall a real disappointment.

5.0 out of 5 stars YOU STILL CAN'T TOUCH THE TOPS !!!, May 14, 2007
This review is from: The Four Tops - Live at the MGM Grand (DVD)
this is all four original FOUR TOPS : LEVI, LAWRENCE , DUKE , AND OBIE . You must understand, this performance was recorded in 1996 - actually OVER 40 years after they'd formed , and this is the last filmed performance with LAWRENCE , filmed only MONTHS before his death... and he was probably very much aware he had only a short time left....yet , DESPITE THAT ,AND THEIR ADVANCED AGE, the TOPS still came out and did a performance that simply SMOKED AND PUT TO SHAME PERFORMANCES BY GROUPS HALF THEIR AGE!!!! TODAYS GROUPS WISHED THEY COULD BE HALF AS GOOD...AND I DARE ANY OF THEM TO BE ABLE TO LAST HALF AS LONG !!!
