5.0 out of 5 stars Techniques that Work!, July 20, 2004
By
This review is from: Four Weeks to a Better-Behaved Child : Breakthrough Discipline Techniques that Work -- for Children Age 2 to 10 (Paperback)
As the mother of four-year-old twin boys, this book was really helpful to me. I was very frustrated by how often I found myself yelling at my children, not to mention upset by how often they yelled back at me! This book offered an alternative to all that anger, and helped my to change the way I interact with my kids. The book explains four basic concepts for disciplining children--and how to apply them in the real world. In some of her examples, I could swear she was in my living room, describing my family; it was very real, and therefore very helpful. I also appreciated that the book was to the point, and did not go on and on. I don't have a lot of time to read about parenting, I'm too busy doing it. And this book was very valuable in terms of giving me more ways to be a better parent.

I can't tell you the difference this book has made in our lives in not even four weeks! Within two days of finishing the book, my son was not only better behaved, but my husband and I were changing the way we responded to him and our other children. This book not only reenforces things you know, but may not always remember to use, but also teaches simple new ideas about discipline and childrens behavior. Focusing on the positive and praising "expected behaviors" has made a huge difference in all of our lives! I highly recommend this book! You will see a difference in your childrens behavior AND in yourself in no time!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful, Practical and Effective Advice for Every Parent, May 14, 2004

This review is from: Four Weeks to a Better-Behaved Child : Breakthrough Discipline Techniques that Work -- for Children Age 2 to 10 (Paperback)
Dr. Chandler's book provides a clear, compassionate and empowering message to parents about how they can foster their children's positive behavior and healthy development. Based on sound research and theory but written in a delightfully clear and engaging way, this book is a much needed guiding light for all parents, practitioners, and anyone who works with children. The "four Cs" of discipline described in the book are key ingredients for raising responsible, well adjusted children. Dr. Chandler's book is filled with wisdom and positive alternatives to anger and punishment that is sure to help parents and children have more positive exchanges, fewer power struggles, and ultimately result in healthier family realtionships. As a psychologist working for the past 25 years with children and families, I highly recommend this book as a "must read" for every parent and anyone who cares about children's well-being. This book is a gift that is filled with enduring wisdom for current parents and future generations.

I found the book easy to read, interesting and most importantly full of useful suggestions. The examples are especially good in relating the philosophical discussion to the real world.

The good news is that her ideas work !

It's great to find a couple of simple rules which change a difficult if not impossible situation around so quickly.

Everybody seems to win here.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Manuel to Behavior, January 26, 2009
This review is from: Four Weeks to a Better-Behaved Child : Breakthrough Discipline Techniques that Work -- for Children Age 2 to 10 (Paperback)
I bought and read this book four years ago and it is the best book I've read on helping my child behave! I tell moms about this book all the time. It sits by my bedside table so that I can refer to it and refresh my memory about the techniques for older children as my boys grow up.

My eldest son was 18 months old when he started acting out. He hit us, slammed his head on the ground and walls, screamed non stop and was very difficult to handle. Not only that, but it turned out that he was speech and language delayed until he turned four. Despite his speech problems, the simple techniques and the gentle handling of our son (encouraged by the book) was easy for him to understand! The simple actions and words (even though he may not have understood) taught him what would happen if he misbehaved.

There is no yelling and no hitting in this system. It's gentle and firm and allows the child to know exactly what would happen if he misbehaves.

I thought this book had really good ideas for keeping your child happy and well behaved. Although it states ages 2-10, it seemed like this book was geared more toward older kids age 4-10. My son is only 2 years old and didn't fit alot of the solutions that were offered. There was one idea I did follow that has definitely worked! Other than that I'll have to wait until he's older to really use the information given. I will definitely refer back to this book again when the time comes!

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally - a book that works., April 15, 2008

I rarely write reviews of books on Amazon - who has the time? But this book is so helpful, so clear and so effective, that I had to take a moment and speak up. It is a smart book, written clearly and the techniques it gives you are simple and kind and they work. I'm seeing big results in just a few weeks. My house is a much nicer place to be. I am a much nicer mom. And most importantly, my daughter is the sweet girl she really wants to be, now that she's got some clear limits and some concrete ways to get good attention from me.
I can't recommend this book highly enough. It's a lifesaver.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great and helpful book, December 12, 2008

This is an easy read, very helpful guide to raising children. I started using this book when my son was 4. He is hyperactive and doing chores and having responsibilites to earn rewards has helped him immensely. The author's form of "time out" works great. She explains step by step what to do and also talks about what to do when you run into problems with it. I also love the marble reward system. This has been the one thing that has worked the most for us. If your kids are going to watch TV anyway, why not make them earn it. I highly recommend this read.

5.0 out of 5 stars So Many Results, So Little Time, November 10, 2011
The title of this book is misleading. I did not have a better-behaved child in four weeks; I had a MUCH better-behaved child in less than three weeks! Dr. Chandler's book is clear, easy to understand, and engaging. I went into it half expecting a snore fest, but the real-life examples liberally scattered throughout the book kept me wanting more.

I ended up typing four pages of notes before beginning the program, just to make sure that Dr. Chandler's techniques were cemented in my mind. From the moment that my husband and I began to discuss the new system with our 5-year-old son, there was a LOT of acting out (spitting, hitting, etc.) that had not been there before; however, once we made it clear that we would not be backing down, he gradually embraced the techniques (less than a week after implementation). Now he seeks out ways to do good things; voices in our house are hardly ever raised; and bedtime - a former source of great stress for all three of us - has gone from a battle zone to bliss.

This book has made an incredible difference in our son's behavior, and I love that the four techniques in it are so easy to follow. Everyone knows exactly what to expect in any given situation, whether we're at home or out and about. Thanks, Dr. Chandler, for writing this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sensible and straight forward, August 24, 2004
This review is from: Four Weeks to a Better-Behaved Child : Breakthrough Discipline Techniques that Work -- for Children Age 2 to 10 (Paperback)
If you calmly read this book without judging your child or yourself, then write down on your daily calendar a reminder to implement this author's ideas, you will find success. The theory is sensible and delivered in a straight forward message. You cannot lose.
