An excellently crafted historical fiction set in 1903,
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Four Wheels Good (Paperback)
Dan Spencer's Four Wheels Good is an excellently crafted historical fiction set in 1903 and the beginning of the automobile age. The Packard Motor Car Company hires foreman Tom Fetch to drive a twelve-horsepower Model F across the American continent, a feat widely believe impossible. Even so, a rival Vermont doctor on a dare is competing against Fetch - with a three-week head start! Spencer's past experience in writing for PBS television series shows through in the crisp, clear, eager prose that unfolds in this unique story about confronting challenges head-on. A highly enjoyable and exciting read. Four Wheels Good is also available in hardcover.

Still my favorite Dan Spencer novel. For anyone who has travelled across country in modern times (i.e., with paved roads at your disposal) this portrayal of the race across America in 1903 is hard to imagine. Dan's characters become your friends within a few pages, and it is hard not to want them to succeed. Their inginuity, and Dan's ability to tell the tale, are worth every penny you spend on this book. You will not be disapppointed.

I enjoyed this book very much. I usually don't read novels but this one is very creative, smart and easy to read. I'd recommend it to anyone with a brain.
